inControl navigation renewal

I’ve just hit 3 years on my P300 and the navigation updates are now disabled. I could renew but I’m struggling with the value after paying out £££ for the extended warranty and ££ for the connected system. Experience of the software has not been good. Very infrequent updates, clumsy update mechanism involving vast downloads, unreliable loading into the car which leaves you with no navigation facility when it fails, loss of traffic sign recognition when the aforesaid nav update fails, very dodgy routing at times, active routing unreliable and slow to update, coverage of minor roads poor, rubbish web interface that seems to have been designed by a sadist. I’m sure there’s more. Yes of course I’ve got CarPlay and Waze but the screen is small and the driver display doesn’t work with it. Has anyone else faced the same decision and if so, what did you do? I think what annoys me most is not only that Jaguar charge for a substandard system, but that they charge a fantasy price for it (why am I not surprised). It should come automatically with the connect system. The other issue is the speed limiter, not yet mandatory but be sure it’s not far off, relies on up to date speed limit info presumably delivered by the nav system assisted by the traffic sign recognition camera. Does this mean that in future we will have to update the nav system at whatever price the maker demands, to keep the legal limiter system working for the MOT? Welcome to the brave new world of subscription options, I suppose.

I'm also just coming up to 3 years. For the nav I'll manage without updates for a while, roads don't change that much! For other things, I'll probably go for 2 years of in control and tracking, but pass on the one year extended warranty. Just not sure what to do for breakdown assist.

I went with the basic in inControl update so the app still works for locking, etc.
Thought long and hard about the tracker but decided not to renew, which I’m still a bit unsure was the right answer…..
Didn’t bother with the navigation as like the OP I rarely use it as it isn’t great and I use CarPlay/Waze/Google
Warranty I decided was not worth it with the cost and moreover some of the exclusions, eg lights. So I am notionally banking that saved fee for future work!
Edit. - for breakdown i simply ticked the green flag box on my car insurance renewal. It’s a shame Jag don’t offer that as a stand-alone upgrade, I would have considered that.

I'm still a couple of years off the same decision but I'll probably go down the wireless carplay adapter route and just use google maps/waze on the main screen.

Having a tracker fitted was a requirement by my insurance company though they didn't specify whose/which system - so I simply maintained the Jaguar subscription and gives me peace of mind.

The software updates for the HERE maps are a ballache, and updates appear on a regular monthly basis but the PITA is having to download the whole of Europe and Russia (you cannot select smaller "tile" regions, as with some other GPS systems) - this usually entails a half-hour download, then a twenty minute upload via USB stick.
As someone's already mentioned, roads don't change that often, so the updates are probably a change in phone number for a McDonald outlet in Outer Mongolia.

Thankfully, I've never had a failed update process and the routing system hasn't let me down so don't appear to have suffered the problems you list.
Routing on any GPS/satnav will vary from device-to-device as each system will use different logarithms and have different 'values' placed upon roads when the software is calculating a route; comparing a Jaguar HERE route with a Garmin route and with a WAZE route will produce three varying sets of results. You take your pick which one you follow but each will get you there.

I agree with your point about mapping update subscriptions - Garmin, for example, give free 'lifetime' updates but that generally means until they deem the device obsolete after a number of years.

I wouldn't renew the map subscription either. To start with HERE's prices are just ridiculous and that's one reason to cancel them.

As said, the roads don't change much and the live traffic doesn't add that much value. It can help a bit but if I really want to check the traffic conditions for a route I check Google maps or Waze. I've been on countless road trips all across Europe with outdated map data in my previous two Jags, never ran into any issues and just occasionally noticed some differences between the maps and reality.

Having said that though I always thought the built in satnav works very well. I might install the UAD CarPlay kit one day but haven't really seen the point yet. I usually just research any longer journey with Google maps or Via Michelin, set it up remotely in the car satnav and use the car satnav plus Waze on my phone as an addition just to get speed cam warnings.

I can’t believe I’m coming up to 3 years old now and having to make the same decision. I will not be renewing the map updates for all the reasons you state. I’ve got used to using waze or Googlemaps via CarPlay and it’s just better. Having a decent Arid Innovations phone holder helps.
