I hate this weather!

Well boys and girls, did I have fun with my big cat yesterday…..

Firstly, due to the severe weather in our fine sunny county, I struggled to open the car door despite having warmed the car up remotely for about 20 minutes. This was due to the lock mechanism being frozen on the outside. Eventually I got it open and climbed inside.

This was when the fun and games started……

Try as I might I couldn’t get the door closed enough to knock out the red warning triangle……by this time I was late for work and needed to get going…so I figured I would start to drive to work with the car bonging at me saying the door was open even though it was shut. A little inconvenience but not a big problem you might think until…….the locking mechanism decided to work after a few hundred yards. Yippee I thought but boys and girls unbeknown to me a lot lot worse was about to happen….

This was when I started to panic because when I eventually arrived at work I couldn’t open the door!! I mean don’t get me wrong as I do love the car but the thought of being trapped inside for hours until the lock thawed wasn’t one I fancied too much.

Anyway, logic took over and I figured that maybe the passenger door would open. I leaned over and gingerly tried the door and fortunately it opened. I then had another problem…how was I going to get out?

Fortunately I am comparatively fit so I managed to turn around in the seat, hitch my backside up over the transmission tunnel onto the passenger seat but my back legs were in the air so I had to somehow twist them down into the passenger well before giving myself one last push to get out of the car! Good job none of my colleagues were in the car park at the time otherwise they would have had a good laugh

The best bit to come yet…..I dusted myself down and walked round to the offending driver’s door to see if I could fix it or at least check it out.

I pushed the handle in slightly and it sprung back out and the door opened…..

Why didn’t it do that when I was in the car as I did try that from inside; I bet if the car could talk it would be chuckling all day yesterday over that!

When I told the boys and girls later they all howled with laughter so I thought you guys would appreciate my little story

Lol, my windows wouldn't lower the required amount but used some luke warm water on the top of the window and the seal and that soon freed it up enough to open the door

I feel your pain. Mine lives outside and although the remote start usually resolves all such issues I have had two occasions in 7+ years of ownership where the lock was completely frozen inside.

The little button in my door handle froze last night so I couldn't open the door using keyless entry - had to resort to the fob. A big push on the button freed it later (don't know why I didn't think of that at the time!). These Jags are fun when it's <0C!

Mine was frozen solid yesterday after not being used for a week.

Stupidly, I didn't turn it over prior to the cold weather, so the Telematics had gone to sleep and couldn't do the usual Remote Start to defrost.

My mains powered car dryer proved itself a handy tool to gently defrost the wing mirror arms and driver's door. It blows air about 10C higher then ambient, so gently melted the ice away, allowing me to unlock without damaging the mirror motors and get in to turn it over.

If you have the foresight to know when it's going to be frozen when you need the car you can set the wake-up timer. Sadly we're not all that prescient.

That's news to me. I've had a look on the Forum and in iGuide, but can't see how/where to set this.

Could you point me in the direction of this info?

In the Jaguar Remote app, go to 'More' -> 'Vehicle Settings' -> 'Wake Up Timer' (bottom of the screen).

It let's you select a time and day to' wake up' the remote system, to allow use of the remote features. I believe it'll then shut down again after 60 hours to preserve the battery life.

And you have to set it within 48 hours of using the car. I have noticed that when I set a wakeup time, the car will "go to sleep" and be uncontactable sooner than the 4 days it normally takes.

Couldn’t do that……it won’t fit with all the other stuff in there!

Besides, I like the thought that it sleeps next to me but just on the other side of the wall

Thank you very much for sending this - I would never have gone into that menu. Some top class UX/UI by Jag there! Surely it would have been better to have in the "Remote" section? I'll give this a test for Tuesday

It's a vehicle setting, not a remote function.

It's a vehicle setting, not a remote function.

I agree - from a technical/engineering perspective, yes, it's a vehicle setting. But even in Vehicle Settings, it's under the "Remote" banner.

From a user/customer journey perspective, it's an enabler for Remote functions. Almost all use cases for enabling wake-up are due to Remote as described by Jag themselves, which for UX/UI convenience should be grouped together.

Ice is still playing havoc with my driver’s side door lock and I’m wondering whether this is going to be a long term problem.

That said, it was minus six degrees in our village this morning and even though I managed to open the door it would not close properly.

I tried the usual tricks ie spraying the lock with de icer and warming the car up for 30 minutes all to no avail.

Fortunately our factory car park is secure and I had to leave the car unlocked until nearly 1 o’clock before it would open / close properly.

I went home for lunch and came back and it was fine but when I finished work at six o’clock…….it was frozen again and despite the fact that it actually opened……I bet you can guess the rest….that’s right it wouldn’t shut!!

I am getting fed up with this now but I do wonder how people abroad cope with this as other countries have much worse weather than us.

Surely there must be a way to prevent this happening??

This caught me out last year. Now I know to prepare. Just poured warm water but once could open dried moisture with a towel to preven it freezing again. Its really annoying though as my Macan has zero issues to resolve. Price to pay for flush handles and frameless windows.

Take a look at the US forum. There are more owners running their F-Types in freezing conditions over there so someone might have some advice. From what I've seen though, as mentioned by Mark, it just seems to be the price you have to pay for frameless windows and flush handles because it also happens to other brands. One of the reasons to why I never leave the F-Type parked up outdoors in freezing temperatures.

Mind you, it's not only frameless pop out handle cars that suffer from this. It also happened once or twice with an XF I had a long time ago during a period when I couldn't use my garage. For instance one morning all seemed fine and I drove off but while driving suddenly the passenger door opened and wouldn't latch/close properly. :/

I think you'll find with door locks the issue is not the lock actuator itself, but it's bowden cables, internal to the door.

The bowden cables, which connect the actuator to the moving parts of the locking mechanism, having moisture inside which freezes and causes many symptoms from handles not popping out, locks not releasing, or not latching shut when trying to close the door, regardless of the remote seeming to operate the lock.

As the cables are internal to the door application of de-icer or even local heat for a short time usually has no effect, only the inside of the door warming during driving or longer term ambient warming works.

Permanent solution is to either lubricate or replace the offending cable or cables.

For the secondary issue of glass or seals sticking simply apply Gummi Pflege to the seals in autumn. Readily available as a stick to simply run around the door seals and they will simply never stick again for the season.

Mines been out all week and today no problem just enjoy the car they don’t need to be wrapped in Cotten wool!
