How to tell whether you've had the software update...

Was in a JLR main dealer today with a minor issue. The person dealing with me remarked that I hadn't had the software update which deadens the exhaust noise - he made the remark when after the car was started by a technician and it made the usual (to me) rasping, farting noise before settling down.

I was surprised, as I bought the car recently from another JLR main dealer with full Approved Used warranty etc. I would have assumed that it would have been done, and in the settings it shows that there are no software updates available.

As it is, the starting noise is delightful, and the car roars, particularly in dynamic mode. I love it. Perhaps I have been lucky. But how do you really tell whether they have applied the update?
 
To find out whether you have any of the three H239 updates applied you need check Jaguar's TopiX system. Or send me your reg or last eight characters of your VIN and I'll look it up.
 
MY20. There are currently no outstanding Field Service Actions for this vehicle. So it has all software updates already applied.
 
Thank you simpleR. I thought it would have been done. Nevertheless, there is a consistent roar and burble on start up, and when pressed the car still makes delightful sounds. I have no intention of removing fuse 15 as it is plenty noisy enough for me already...

I thought this, but honestly it takes 2 seconds... give it a go. I'll never go back.
It makes no material difference to the startup or idle sound (as your valves are open for both of those anyway) but where it REALLY makes a difference is just normal road driving, because on my car as soon as you drive off, the valves are closed until about 3k rpm, which i'm rarely over. I feel so much more engaged with the car sub 3k rpm just because i can hear it a bit more. Really is a night and day difference and not remotely too much (that's coming from a 21 plate p450 which are slightly more noise gimped than older versions anyway) - yours might be plenty loud enough already!

The correct way is to use TopiX. However, as part of the software update they changed the memory status of Dynamic Mode. Without the software update, the car will remember the last state of Dynamic Mode for up to six hours from the last ignition cycle. So if you are in Dynamic Mode and stop at a restaurant and come back out to the car an hour later it will still start in Dynamic Mode. With the software update, Dynamic Mode resorts to off upon ignition start every time. Technically, the car remains in Dynamic Mode while it's off but the software update makes the ignition on sequence reset it to off.

So it's easy to check if you've had the software update. If Dynamic Mode does not survive an ignition cycle then your car has had the software update applied.
 
There are three versions of H239.

H239 V1 in 2018 so cars forget dynamic mode at each ignition cycle.

H239 V2 in 2020 to keep exhaust valves closed below around 1500rpm regardless of mode.

H239 V3 in 2022 which I don't think we have much information on or facts but based on other posts possibly valves stay shut until over 3k rpm.
 
Do we know if some H239 versions only apply to some model years or engine types?

Mine has no outstanding updates and clearly got V1 (if restarted after having being driven in dynamic mode, dynamic mode pops up but immediately switches over to normal mode), but I can control the valve opening manually in any mode and at any rev range. Certainly can't complain because IMHO that's exactly how it should work but it's a bit puzzling.
 
An MY18 is applicable to all three H239 updates.
TopiX is the only way to check.
 
Interesting. Maybe it also depends on the market. I never use topix any more now that they started charging for the access but would expect the OSH to also show if something was outstanding (and there's nothing there). I also explicitly asked the dealer where I service the car to check for any outstanding software updates the other year.
 
Outstanding campaigns, as they are known, are not on OSH. Presume you are not in UK?
 
Ah, ok, I saw there's a section called Outstanding Alerts on the OSH main page, which I thought would display that kind of info. Nope, I'm in Luxembourg.

Dear simpleR,
I trade a week ago my 2017 p300 for a ftype SVR 2017 MY2018.
My car crackle and bang all the way when its parked.
Riding the car, it does not make any pop, only the svr noise in acelerating.

My multimedia software is 19C, and its asking to update to S22a.

I notice that i dont have in this car, the option to startup by incontrol app, like i had in my P300 of 2017.

I did not accept the multimedia update.

My concern is that the car have the h251 instaled. I unplug the tube of the two exhaust valves, and still no pops.

As i understand, the pops&bangs are a timming and ignition, that i thing previous owner leet jaguar take it out the factory map.

Can you please send me a privat message, so i could send you my car VIN to look what updates it received ?

The multimedia update is not related to H239 software update for drive by noise. Any multimedia update will not affect exhaust noise or anything related to driving experience.

Do check dynamic setting is in factory default mode. Some software updates can change the default dynamic mode to comfort. Select dynamic mode. Go into i-dynamic settings on head unit and ensure it is factory default mode.

I will update the multimedia then, as nothing will go wrong with that.

My dynamic is all set to sport.

I unplug the tube of the valves, just to try, and the car makes a little pops in normal. In dynamic + sport gearbox no pops.

This car has all H239 software updates applied. I would guess the outstanding campaigns were applied on 16th January 2025 when it was connected to Jaguar for a diagnostic check which resulted in a new battery.
 
I am not aware of anyone successfully getting the Jaguar map reverted specifically to undo H239 updates.

Thank you for all your help.
I talk today to a ex worker from jaguar.
He say he can install a previous jaguar software on the car, because he have a jaguar machine.
But he is asking, if you can see what were the car software number before the update in January 2025.

If this info is not show, if you know, what is the software that my svr came out of factory.

With this, he can select the previous software (knowing its number) with his machine, and reverse the problem.

I contact special vehicles operation and bestspoke, but they say can not help me with this.
