.........But maybe not for long!

Have pondered about buying a jag for a while. Wanted an XF but bought a Citroen C5. Thought about an F type but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much for this tight Cornishman, ( we make Yorkshiremen and Scots look spendthrifts..). So bought a Boxster, then a Chimaera, and now a R172 350 SLK. BUT....I am coming into a few bob in a month or so and will have around £15k ish burning a hole in my pocket. The SLK is worth maybe £10/12k trade. So total whack to spend around £25k ish.

As I am now of that age when I wish for something nice but maybe naughty., the F might fit the bill. I am not going upwards to an AMG 55 or backwards to a 911/Boxster etc....So the F comes into mind and they do look nice. Has to be a convertible.....tho.

One small area of confusion is the exhaust jobbie noise thingy. It will be either an S or maybe a V8 (but I am sure thats too much....££ wise and just way more power than I would ever need/use.....)...So an S would suite me fine I think...back to the exhaust thingy. .. All S 's have the active exhaust but the switchable ones were an option. Is that right? BUT do they all have that switch? Just not connected?. ( Reason asking is my old Triumph bike had all the switches for everything but not nec connected)!

Price wise, Most likely a 2014/5 will be in my budget range.

So apart from FSH etc whats the main points to look for and YES I will go for a drive etc etc.

TY

Mike. I will drive sunny days only....hardly ever in the rain, car will be garaged etc etc.

Welcome to the forum.

Drive a few examples so you get to know which engine you like. The early examples have a louder exhaust that the later ones, even louder if certain software updates not done.

Have a look at the video in this thread as it says the things to look for - the cars are fairly solid so don't get worried about the list of things they say but a good list of what to look out for.

And when u see a car you like put the vin in here to see the service history - most will list the things done (eg if diff oil changed in time)

Welcome!

Since you're looking for an early car, just be prepared for the sticky interior plastics issue. Some early engines (and I think only the V6 was concerned) produced before about mid 2014 had dodgy con rod bearings which could lead to catastrophic failure. Most of those engines have probably failed by now but some may still be out there.

The V6(S) vs V8 question has been discussed a fair bit both on here and in other forums and groups. They're two great options but quite different both with their own pros and cons. They both have more power than you'll need on public roads, unless you care about red light racing where an AWD V8 would be the best. Some prefer the sound and looks of the V6, some prefer the sound and looks of the V8. It boils down to what character you want your F-Type to have - one that sounds and feels like an Italian sports car or one that sounds and feels like a German muscle car.

have watched the video recommended by who knows above. Not a lot anyone can do if a conrod is going! V6 S seems to be perhaps the best of most worlds....

It doesn't get better than the V6S IMHO, but that's because it's exactly the way I expect the F-Type to feel like, have zero interest in any more straight line grunt and would rather get some Detroit muscle if I wanted a V8 in my life.

I guess you already trawled youtube also but in case you didn't there's quite a few comparisons of the different versions there.

Yep.....amazing how many hours fly by on you tube etc! Second hand prices seem to be dropping a little but of course thats of no consequence as I have the SLK to sell or trade......and it will probably be the latter!!! Still keen on the F type ......but looking around I cant really think of a decent competitor in the looks/performance/price world. I have had a Boxster....bland as f***, My Chimaera was just old, felt old, drove old, looked old. A 911.......expensive. (or 964 or whatever they really are)....I havent a clue. The combination of a bit of everything...Comfort, style, performance etc.....You dont see many in my neck of the woods in East Cornwall......
