Hankering after a V8

I adore my V6S. My car is perfect (after a less than perfect intro thanks to a shite main dealer).

But recently I've driven my father-in-law's V8 and I'm now wanting one.

I'm not sure if this is a bad thing or not. After all, V6S owners are proud to own the best F-Type made aren't they?

Trying to think of the pros and cons.

What do you all think? Anyone else been here?

Anyone after a very nicely specced V6S?!?

Take this comment how you want, there's probably some marketing drivel going on and I have nothing against the V8's at all (drove one around a track and loved it and the sound is fantastic!), but ever since the F-Type was announced, Jaguar themselves have been harping on about how the V6 S is the "one to have" for people that want the most out of their F Type. For "True Drivers"

I recently did a track day at Brands Hatch in an Ariel Atom, Aston V8 Vantage and Ferrari F430 and all my racing instructors said: "Oh you have an F-Type? 6 or 8?" And when I said 6 they too, were all "Oh yeah that's the one to have, high five!" (on a side note the gearbox in our F's leaves the Ferrari and Aston's gearboxes for dead, its amazing how much quicker or ZF boxes are!"

It's all personal opinion, of course, I think if I were going to go V8, then I'd want the SVR. And then I have little doubt there will be an SVR-GT or something similar, and I'm gonna want that as well haha

It'll be a never ending circle!

If you want a more dangerous car to drive then simply turn off the traction control on your V6S. That'll give you the 'riding by the seat of your pants' feel you are after from a V8

To be honest I'd never thought I'd find myself thinking I wish my car had a little less power sometimes. The V8 is savage, but all that power isn't that useable on normal roads - it's just so quick, and I can see why the V6 is "the one to have".

But... I like my cars to scare me a little and by goodness the sound is insane!

Hi Moz,

So you've driven the V8 and feel you want one but you haven't said why? Noise, power, something else? If we know what it is that now attracts you, then maybe we can persuade or dissuade you (if you want us too??)

regards, Paul

Noise definitely. Acceleration definitely. Not too fussed about the seat of the pants thing. I'm not after being scared or being a chav (sorry I meant) drift king.

I've ridden superbikes for 20 years (my last R1 had 207 rwbhp) and the V8 almost matches that feeling. The V6 doesn't.

I've tried to convince my F-in-L to swap for a while but he isn't convinced 😂

I've driven both extensively and there's no denying the V8 has a great soundtrack and is a beast straight line, but I'm not convinced it's as nimble in the twisty bits.

If I needed more power and loved the car I had (which I do with mine) I'd chip it which would give me 470hp for c£500 and if I felt the need to exceed 500hp then an overdrive pulley would do that.

I'd retain the car, have all the grunt and performance, better mpg, lower tax and insurance and no financial penalty of a car swap.
All said a V8 itch is a difficult one to ignore ..

Had a 3.0ltr S for three years I now have an SVR, also have an XFR. although very capable the 3.0ltr does not and cannot have the grunt and drivability of 5.0 Ltd V8s. The sound clearly is totally different. Further the fuel consumption is better with the SVR over the S.

No substitution for cubes as they say.

Probably to do with less effort required at low speeds.. these smart V8s today shut off 4 cylinders while cruising, don't they?

Thankfully not!

I'd really like to know where you get these figures from.

The guys over in the US have been tinkering with remaps of the V6 lump and can't get an engine to go over 400hp reliably - I think someone is pulling your chain!

Interesting debate. Thanks chaps.

I might see what mine is worth on a trade in, get really disappointed and forget the whole thing!!!!!!!

Not really - just go to the well known supplier Racehip and you'll see that the chip there alone takes it to +90 hp to c471hp for £549

Let's assume a bit of marketing hype but of the right order

I've been running a similar chip on my 3.0S XF for a few years and getting a very noticeable +65hp, 700nm, better MPG and smoother performance

Bit of googling on supercharger overdrives finds plenty of places that for a crate upgrade and remap get above 450hp such as
http://www.davidapplebyengineering.com/jagf-type.html

Sure I oversimplified to illustrate a point and it takes a bit more effort to hit 500hp, but I come from a background of ///M BMW's running 500hp+ with a turbo on a 3.2 and we now live in a world where 150hp/litre is readily achievable in forced induction engines

I tried a Base V6 and was very underwhelmed. Then I tried a V8S and had to have it. I've not stop smiling since. I traded a V8 Vantage for it, just go and get one. Here's my amethyst black one in the sunshine!

Always struggled to get 30mpg from the 3.0ltr on a long run, where as the SVR easily hits that figure. Ok, drive them hard and perhaps the smaller one will use slightly less. The V6 is forever changing gear to keep it on the boil. The extra torque of the V8 just deals will similar throttle input demands. I find the V6 tiresome after a few hours of A roads.

So I tested the V6 and then went for a V8R AWD.
This car is INSANE. I agree with Megatron - I had a bike and this thing is just as fast but (a little bit) more useable. It is a bit scary sometimes. The V6 is probably better balanced, a little lighter, and you can use more percentage of the power and revs - mine rarely goes above 4-5k on the counter unless I'm really hooning it. I got the AWD for no tail out slideyness as even though I track drive a bit and could probably handle it, I really don't want that on the roads. Bit of a mistake as in the wet it will still step the tail out occasionally even with the AWD. Genuinely don't know how I would get about in the winter if I had a V8 without it.
That NOISE though. Wow. It's so addictive! Makes me grin every time I'm in the thing and I'm one of those people who pops and bangs the exhaust from time to time just for the hell of it.
P.s. Shunt I really like the amethyst black!

So I've made a call about a car and am awaiting the call back with "figures"......

The car I'm looking at does not have the loud button (it's a very early car) but I have been told it's easily retro-fitted. I guess you can still have a loud exhaust in dynamic mode but have to be in normal mode to have a quieter ride (i.e. You can't have a quiet exhaust in dynamic mode like you can with the switchable exhaust)??

It does have adaptive dynamics in the spec list. Is this the screen where you can configure suspension, throttle response or is that configurable dynamics?
