Gearbox Service

As my F is now 11 years old, I'm sure it must need new oil in the gearbox, even if it just avoids issues later down the line.

Anyone had it done properly - ie new filter (i think they replace the lower casing as its built in), gearbox flush and full ZF oil refresh? If so, how much and where? Any recommendations.

Even though my indy does my regular servicing, i'm not confident in them doing the gearbox to be honest.

I'm in Worcester these days so somewhere within an hour or so of me would be ideal.

I bought the ZF kit from Ebay, see below, and my independent changed it for me.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175416401900. European Gearbox Parts' service was fantastic. They confirmed this was the correct item by checking my VIN and the kit arrived with me next day (although as I'm in N. Ireland which still counts as EU for custom purposes - shipping to GB might be different).

As far as I know, ZF recommend changing it after 60,000km (approx 37,000 miles).

By the way, I wouldn't flush it, just change oil & filter. There are a number of reports of flushing the gearbox throwing up problems.

Bought mine from them as well. It's sat in the box in the garage at the momnet until I sort out a suitable filler to get the new oil in once it's been changed, and some way of measuring the oil temperature to ensure the correct amount of fill.

Had mine done at MGA Derby in 2020. Car was six years old & just fancied getting all fluids done. I’ve attached a breakdown of costs & the gearbox service was £495.00 plus VAT. Few pictures of the work…

Appreciate a bit of trek for you but MGA were fantastic to deal with. Spotless unit, everything filled in, signed, test results printed out, pictures, the lot. For some reason they don’t MOT on site. Would highly recommend them for any Jaguar servicing.

I’m sure it didn’t need doing. I’m sure it could be done cheaper or even DIY’d but I don’t want cheap, nor messing with an expensive 8-Speed ZF Auto Gearbox ££££££

That aside, wife owns a 107k RR Evoque. Its 6-Speed ZF & purrs along having never been touched.

As it happens this young chap posted a video recently about the DIY gearbox service he performed on his own car.

It doesn't look that hard really - i might DIY.

I did the diff oil a couple of years ago so not much more to it than that!

I'll have a think - thanks all :)

I did a diff oil change recently and managed to spill the diff oil all over myself and the floor by using a hand pump that screwed into the diff oil bottle . The pump didn't reach to the bottom of the bottle so I put the oil into a bigger container that then fell over .Doh!
Second attempt involved me buying a Sealey TP9312 12volt electric pump from Ebay for about £30 , I found it so much easier to use than trying to hold the filling tube into the diff whilst hand pumping the oil and holding the container.
I mention this as the 12v pump looks like it would make the gearbox oil easier to change too.
It is quite a slow pump though ,it took about 3 minutes to put 0.8 litres of oil into the diff but faster ones are available.

I have a car that is 11 years old and I have booked into have the gearbox, diff oil and engine oil all changed with Swallows. They are just south of Bristol, have a good reputation and will update the electronic service records too.

I’ve seen an independent garage talk about using a large syringe to put the diff oil in. When I looked into it, you can get 1000ml syringes

That’s what I did yep - Draper, Sealey, Laser, Hilka all sell them. Usually 500ml capacity and some are clear sided and graduated.

Can i ask what they have quoted you to do it - did they break down the cost?

Thats great - really helpful - thank you.

My V6S is now 10 years young and as part of the last major service at 53k miles it had engine coolant renewed, ZF transmission service including a new OEM sump with the built-in filter, 9 litres of transmission fluid, and drain/renew rear differential fluid. The parts bill was £624 ex VAT most of which was for the JLR sump and 9 litres of ZF oil!! I recommend my local indie Mitsiland in Denton, Manchester where Phil and his enthusiastic team have been looking after my F-Type for the past 3 years. They have the system to update your JLR web-based service records too.

Having used Swallows I can say that they are a good outfit and we’re happy to take photos of the car while it was up on the lift as well as give me a sample of the oil in case I wish to test it.

Jaguar Quote 8.5 litres to replace the gearbox oil, how can this be if in reality all the oil cannot be drained?
