Gearbox jolt... but only in auto... fine in manual mode...

Hi, 70k mls V6s, serviced properly etc. Ive owned the car for just over 9 months and it hasnt skipped a beat in around 2,000 mls.

It had major work at JLR prior to my ownership as a result of seized injectors but thankfully had most of the known issues dealt with at the same time, belts, coolant pipes etc.

Query... when in manual mode, in any driving mode, the gear changes are seamless, all the way up and back down. However, in auto mode, in any driving mode, when slowly coming to a stop, feels like 2nd to 1st, there is a little jolt, almost sounds/feels mechanical....

Who knows if the box is going from 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st as it doesnt show you.

Its been very consistent and isnt getting worse or better but i wondered if this was typical or not?

Manyt thanks, Simon

Has the gearbox fluid been changed? At 70k miles ZF would expect it to need it.

Also, I don't think the autobox does change down to 1st, it certainly doesn't in my V8, because if I'm in manual mode and come to a stop it doesn't shift down lower than 2nd. It might shift to 1st if you floor it in auto from a standstill (kickdown) but normally I'd expect it to pull away easily in 2nd.

I've noticed that after an oil change (engine oil, not gearbox), the auto change seems smoother. It doesn't seem that logical, but there you go - just my experience.

Thanks for the relipes. I had the diff oil and engine oil done in November before it went away for winter. He showed me the diff oil and it was pretty thick so it was the right move to get it done.

Its in today at my local specialist (B&M/German Autocare Leeds) for its MOT so ive asked them to run diagnostics to see if it throws up anything.

I also noticed when driving with the window down theres sometimes an audiable 'click/tick' sound on gear change. Wonder if thats typical or not...

Thanks

also... it had the gearbox fluid done 2k miles ago when it had its major work at JLR. See pics of the invoice (2 months prior to my ownership). Injectors, coolant pipes, timing chain, belts. £5k including a 15% discount. Poor person sold it straight after having the work done.

I've always assumed a slight jolt now and again in the lower gears is just due to the box slightly mismatching the engine speed. It's no different to other automatics I've had.

But if yours is more pronounced, a German specialist could actually be a good shout with the ZF box being German and common on BMWs etc.

If you're talking about the German specialist on the ringroad in Pudsey, we're in the same neck of the woods.

Another one to consider is an indi called Jagwar (north of Harrogate). I called in short notice for some advice a few months ago. They know F-Types well, were superbly helpful and I'm sure would give an honest opinion.

Cool thanks. I dont think it'll be anythign sinister but lets see!

German autocare isnt the best name tbf, they do loads of JLR vehicles and have always been very honest.

Thanks for the recommendation on Jagwar.

cheapest quote i can get for gear box fluid is £450 - £500, the whole sump needs to come off and run throught the gears to empty the oilways , so question if £273 would do it properly?

Update - cleared a fault code on diagnostics but the symptom is sort of still there. I called a ZF specialist https://leedstransmissionservices.co.uk/gear-box/zf-gearbox-repairs/

They basically said if its very minor theres no point looking into it any further, just wait/see if it gets any worse. I suspect it wont doing 2k mls per year.
