Faulty Auto Windscreen Wipers?

Looking some advice, guys!

The problem started when a stone cracked my windscreen during the summer. This was replaced under my insurance by one of the nationwide windscreen companies. However, since the repair, my auto wipers don't work properly. When it is light rain or drizzle, they seem to work ok. However, as the rain gets heavier, the auto function stops working altogether and I have to move the switch to normal/fast speed manually.

To be fair, the windscreen folk are still trying to fix this. Firstly, they put a bit of extra gel on the sensor, then tried a new sticky pad. The next option appears to be another screen!

To me, it seems like the maybe the feed or wire from the sensor which tells the wipers to go to constant/fast speed isn't working.

Does anyone know if this is feasible? Or has anyone encountered a similar issue? I would have thought a replacement sensor might be the next step. BTW, yes, I have got the Auto Wipers switched on in the dashboard menu :?

Any thoughts?

Not sure if they're any good to you but have a read through these links from the XF and XFR forum....

Wow. Thanks RPSN. Next step is to see if I've any fault codes then. I'll keep you informed.

👍
In case you did end up having to replace the Rain Sensor, I’ve attached some further TOPIx info....

Update:

The windscreen folk made a further appointment and fitted another new windscreen, incidentally a Fuyao. When they'd finished and squirted water on the screen with a hand held sprayer, the auto-wipers seemed to work ok. However, just as previously, when driving in real rain they didn't work. The wipers sometimes didn't come on until the screen was completely obscured and sometimes not at all.

I took the car to a local garage for an OBD scan for faults. This showed up a number of codes, one of which was "B10AD-87, History, Rain Sensor". The garage cleared all the codes and another test drive revealed the auto-wipers working perfectly. So it seems that clearing the Rain Sensor fault code has cured the wipers issue.

A re-scan after the test drive showed no Rain Sensor fault code. However it did throw up another fault code, "B13C2-49, Permanent, Windshield misting sensor". A Google search shows the Land Rover sensor to be behind the mirror, so I assume the Jaguar one is too. Presumably, during the windscreen replacement, this sensor has also been damaged or not replaced properly.

Does anyone know if this is a separate sensor, or is it an integral part of the rain sensor?

The saga continues....

This US site is very good for identifying parts from the diagrams. It only appears to show the rain sensor module, unless it's part of another subject say heating/ventilation.

Probably this sensor. Item 10 on the diagram,

Thanks mickjaguar.

That would make sense. Maybe the code reader calls it a "windscreen mist sensor" and Jaguar call it a "humidity sensor". In any case, if this is it:

the windscreen guys have obviously had to remove it and put it back when replacing the screen. So maybe they've not plugged it in or seated it properly?...

Good to hear that the auto wipers are working correctly.....I'm assuming you've tested them when driving in the rain?

The humidity sensor is separate to the rain sensor and is part of the climate control system. To assist you further, I’ve attached the TOPIx documents for this which include:

Climate Control - Description and Operation.

Climate Control - Diagnostic Trouble Codes - Front Windscreen/Windshield Misting Sensor.

The DTC's are B13C2-86 / B13C2-87 / B13C2-96 and they show the description / possible causes / action. They are slightly different to the code you have (B13C2-49, Permanent, Windshield misting sensor) but they are relevant....

Thanks RPSN.

In answer to your question, yes, the test drive was in the rain. Here in Northern Ireland we usually don't have to wait long for a rainy day  .

I'm guessing the DTC I have is just a general one and not as specific as the ones you've listed as the code reader used is not a Jaguar specific model.

I'll keep you informed....

Same over here, but this year has been exceptionally dry for a change :)

As the DTC you’ve had shows ‘B13C2-49, Permanent, Windshield misting sensor’, this may well be the equivalent of the last DTC shown in the TOPIx attachment I posted earlier i.e. ‘B13C2-96 Front Windscreen /Windshield Misting Sensor - Component internal failure’.....Worth taking note of the detailed information provided with it.

Thanks RPSN. I've another meeting with the windscreen folk scheduled for this afternoon & I'm printing out the info. you kindly provided to bring with me.

Latest (hopefully final) Update:

Following 2 further unsuccessful visits with the windscreen people (which included an incorrect disconnection of an OBD session with the resultant flat battery), I eventually got them to agree to me taking the car to the Jag Independent whom I use. He cleared the DTC's and, during the process, apparently cycled the ignition off and on again. AIUI, this is a necessary part of the process to reset the system. This seems to have finally solved all the problems, leaving everything working again, no DTC's now showing and no new parts actually needed!

Thanks again, guys, for all your helpful suggestions, Topix pdf's and links to parts lists. I hope that my posting the details of this frustrating saga may help someone in the future!
