Michael are the valves stuck or just stiff? (does the metal rod push in and out relatively easy)

its very easy to take the system off and get to the valves inside - this is what i did as a long term fix. If you dont fancy it yourself, take to a local exhaust specialist and it should be minimum labour to remove and grease up the valves. Please dont pay £2,500 from Jag for a new box, just seems like a complete waste. Ignore Darren's reply above, he has money to burn ;)

I have the same issue with an exhaust flap seized on one side. Jaguar dealership wants £2k for a new back box. My MOT is due next month. Can any one tell me what the purpose of these flaps is and more importantly can the non operation of them cause an MOT failure? If the only function of the flaps is to change the exhaust note then I will live with it and maybe try to free it with copper grease.

Like you said, it's exhaust noise. Won't effect your MOT at all. Jaguar (and most dealers) wont go through the effort to actually fix what's wrong they just replace the WHOLE exhaust system from what i've found. I had a modified Astra VXR where the exhaust flexi was starting to split and leak a little. They wanted to charge me £1k for a whole new exhaust system. Needless to say I walked out and just took it to my local trusted garage and they sorted it for a fraction of the price.

Any garage should be able to throw it up on some ramps, grease/lube the rods that actuate the valves. If they keep sticking after that, there could be a build up of soot or something else in the exhaust blocking the flap.
 
Mine passed MOT last year (3yrs old) with a stuck valve open so I wouldn't worry.

The exhaust was swapped under Jaguar extended warranty a few days later.
 
Thanks. I’m puzzled by you and at least one other I think saying that the exhaust was replaced under the extended warranty. When I read through the warranty the exhaust does not appear to be covered at all. Am I missing something?

The warranty I got when buying my car states that the exhaust is not covered as I suspect yours does too. SimpleR says he had his covered under an extended warranty. Without seeing the documentation as to what it covers, we can't tell if one warranty covers more than another.

If it turns out we all have the same warranty, SimpleR could have gotten lucky and had a half-decent dealer who just replaced it regardless of what warranty said.
 
Maybe valve failure, being mechanical, isn't actually considered part of "the exhaust", regardless of where the valves sit?
 
A few things to note.

Firstly, I've said this a few times. Having a good relationship with the garage of your choice is key. My 4th service at main dealer after a quick email chat with the manager is cheaper than any independent could get near. This means when you get a problem, and I've had a few (haven't we all at one point or another in life), everything is smoothed over and sorted out. I trust the main dealer because I trust the service manager, he is a Jaguar fan, drives old Jaguars and understands, meets me, we have a chat, we've always agreed on things, all good in my opinion but I have seen people online roasting them for poor service. I guess its how you approach the situation sometimes.

There are two different warranties. Extended (with seems to cover everything, terms and conditions apply LOL, up to value of car) and Select Extended (which is a specific list of items with a £3k claim limit). I have extended.

I don't honestly don't know how, but I had a new headlight washer pump and new rear exhaust and all I paid was £40 for the MOT.
The wording states, a few choice extracts shortened by me..... "covers mechanical and electrical failure defects to factory fitted components and consequential failures"..... "should a component fail and as a consequence cause a failure to another component not normally covered by the warranty to fail, then we'll pay for that as well" and finally under the not covered section..... "exhaust systems (catalytic convertors are covered for failure except where damaged is caused by mis-fuelling or accident damage)

Its quite a comprehensive warranty to me. The policy document is very short. So I presume Jaguar know how to claim for things?
I think this part is key "should a component fail (exhaust values for example) and as a consequence cause a failure to another component (the rear exhaust section) not normally covered by the warranty to fail (IE the exhaust), then we'll pay for that as well (IE a new exhaust back box)".

Well I’m puzzled by that. There is no such wording like that in my warranty booklet. Can you confirm that you have a warranty provided by Jaguar and not something you have purchased elsewhere, as there are third party warranties available which may well cover much more if you are prepared to pay for it.
