Engine oil for an F Type R

Hi
According the the Owners Manual, Jaguar recommends CASTROL EDGE PROFESSIONAL SAE 0W - 20 OIL.
From previous cars, I have some Castol Edge in both SAE 0W - 40 and also some 5W - 30 OIL.
Would it be bad for my engine or contravening the terms of my Jaguar warranty to use either of these oils?
Any opinions much appreciated.
Regards
Captai Slow

I think Castrol Edge Professional 5W20 is also recommended and I often see this on good offers on ECP, especially during their many DFS-style sales! Also worth searching around for a few codes for them.

Got the 8L required for a change for about £70 when a dealer would charge about £130. No dealer has ever complained about me taking my own oil in for a service and can normally make a reasonably good saving this way. I must say that I'd heard that the V8 was relatively sensitive about the oil and personally I wouldn't risk using a non-recommended spec and much less a totally different viscosity rating. Just my own opinion though.

Seb

They just filled it up with me from their maintenance supply - I checked the reciept and it was 5W30 they put in. So if the dealers are willing to put it in, I wouldn't worry about trying to source 0W20...
I can't see mixing 1L of 5W30 with 0W20 making that much of an issue. The one is slightly thicker both at normal and hot temperature, and since oils mix then it will just cause the net oil in the system to be slightly more viscous than just 0W20.
Since the F-type has 16k or 1 year service intervals, then if kept on this schedule the oil will be changed 'regularly' so shouldn't cause any residual issues.

I was a bit annoyed when I made the journey to get 0W20 oil specifically as the manual says, and saw they had topped it up with 5W30 which I already have at home. It's getting the first major service next month so will be changing the oil then anyway (no doubt they will fill it with 5W30) - managed to negotiate the price for a major down to £463.00 after asking the dealer to break down the cost of labour, parts etc and then explain to me why they try and charge £632 (nearly £200 more) for a major over a minor, when they don't change the spark plugs. (apparently they don't change them until the 100k service?! )

Major is 2hrs labour - £250. Parts, filters, fluids etc accumulated to about £180... hence they had no where to go really...
I found that the wrong oil was on the invoice but having checked with the tech he confirmed he had put the right oil in

Apparently the invoice that I got had the service items such as oil filled in by the parts department, the service department know what they are doing

We use Guy Salmon at Bristol and always ask for Darren...great guy a real petrol head and has great sympathy for customers cars

Just another thought, if 0W - 20 oil is the important criteria, what about Mobil 1 0W - 20 which is available.
Would it mix with Castrol Edge?

Regards

Captain Slow

The 0W-20 refers to just the viscosity. There are several other factors to the oil in addition to just viscosity.

When I emailed Jaguar asking which oils were approved by them to <span ="rear-rim--full"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-ansi-:EN-GB;mso-fareast-: EN-US;mso-bidi-:AR-SA">their STJLR.51.5122 specification, their
reply only listed the 'Castrol EDGE Professional E 0W-20' oil as meeting
their specification.

Other oil manufactures may say their oil
'meets' Jaguar's specification or even claim it's 'approved' by Jaguar
but unless that information comes from Jaguar it cannot be guaranteed.

The chances are that in reality it makes minimal difference.
For
example Castrol make a Castrol EDGE Professional V 0W-20, approved for
Volvo use and an H 0W-20 approved for Honda use. Are these oils really
any different in real terms?

The potential issue is if you need a
warranty claim regarding an oil related problem and someone discovers
the 'incorrect' oil has been used and uses this to get out of their
obligations.
