EML on - catalyst efficiency

Hello All,

Sorry, not posted for ages but still have my 2014 "R" and still, overall, positive about ownership.

The car dropped an injector earlier in the year so I had all 4 on that bank replaced. The eml then came on after 100 miles or so for bank 1 upper oxygen sensor so I had that replaced.

30 miles later the eml is on again, this time for catalyst efficiency. I'm trying a bottle of catalyst / fuel system cleaner in the current tank of fuel but if this does not work, do any of the great minds on here have any other options before I have to consider
A - new JLR cats £1665 each side
B - Swallows 300 cel cats and system for @ £1800

Myself and my nervous wallet appreciate any chemical or mechanical cleaning solutions or ideas.

Share the diagnostic information please and which product you're using. Cataclean is a good option and you may need to run two bottles before cat efficiency improves.

Here's what I'd do: clear the codes, add a bottle when there's 20L and drive for at least 30 minutes without stopping. Only top up when low fuel warning comes up. Rinse and repeat if the code comes back.

It could be a failed Oxygen sensor either pre or post-cat, even though you've already replaced one, it could've conked out again. The only way for the computer to diagnose a failed cat is via the temperature difference between the two sensors. If you've got any diagnostics kit then do a live view of the sensors temperature and/or voltage on both banks so you can confirm if it is a failed sensor. Do you use standard or premium fuel?

Thanks, yes I added a bottle of CataClean and 20 litres of fuel and drove around until back down to empty warning light. It's a waiting game now as I sorned the car at the end of September so will reawaken the car in March or April, clear the codes and see if it's fixed or not. I didn't note down the codes when it happened as was on the way to Castle Combe for the JEC day and diverted off to Tom Lenthals just to get a quick read to make sure it was OK to use.

Hi Kev, thanks for the info on how the car detects cat efficiency, I have a friend with some experience with TorquePro, I'll ask him if it can diagnose down to that level, I think perhaps not. I used to use any fuel but have switched to premium since the first injector went. In fact I also use premium diesel in my BMW every 3 fill ups just to try to avoid future issues.
