Emission Stickers for Euro Road Trip

Hi All,

Spending August criss-crossing the Alps as far as Amalfi, Dubrovnik and Hungary. Thought I was set with all required paperwork, and purchase vingettes as I go.

But I just came across a thread which mentioned Emission Stickers which I haven't come across on previous Euro road trips.

Could someone tell me where these apply (e.g. major cities only ?) and where do I get the stickers ?

Countries include France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and Hungary.

I drive a lot in different European countries and the only emission stickers I'm aware of are the German Umweltplaketten and the French Critair both of which are needed for central parts of bigger cities. Never cared about getting the German one but got a Critair sticker for a car that I drove frequently to central Paris for a while.

Organisations like the AA (e.g. the German ADAC) should have plenty of info about this available online.

I’ve just come back driving through France and applied for a Crit’ Air sticker - if you google Crit’ Air you’ll soon find where to apply. Think the RAC website had a link. The sticker can take time to arrive but you get emailed something you can put on your dashboard in the meantime.

To be honest I think you’d be very unlucky to be fined for not having a sticker but better safe than sorry.

Be careful googling the Crit’ Air sites as there are a lot of fake ones charging €20+ , this is the official site https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/

Thanks all. Generally driving the passes, but do have a few cities included (Strasbourg, Verona, Rome and Budapest). Will get on those websites.

If I get some nice shots I'll be sure to post a few 👍🏻

Belgium has Low Emission Zones in Brussels, Antwerp, and Gent. If you are stopping off in these cities then you’ll need to register and pay if you don’t meet the criteria… they don’t issue stickers….
If you’re transiting on the motorways there is no requirement….

Yeah, in this case only transiting through Belgium. No major cities in France or Germany on this trip. Should be fine. But thanks everyone.

Don't know if you considered it but a really useful thing is also an electronic toll tag, above all for France. Don't know if you can get one to the UK but one example is Bip&Go which works in both France, Italy, Spain and Portugal for motorways and carparks.

It can make a big difference especially during the holiday period like in August. I've used tags like that for ages and am always surprised about how few people, including the French, use toll tags in the French motorway tolls.

Found the tolls going south through France a bit of a pain. Nowadays I take the road from Calais to Belgium (no tolls) and do my southern run on the autobahns - while listening to "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk of course :D

Fair enough. I love a good autobahn run and the autobahns can be really nice too as long as you don't get stuck in a Stau. Then Luxembourg should be more or less on your way. Great place to stop and one of Europe's least known driving paradises. :) Route Napoleon is also a nice option if you want to avoid tolls.

KM69MZX this sounds like one hell of a road trip! Where are you based in the UK, how long is your trip away (a whole month?)
