Drive Shaft on Back Order - Thoughts on a way forward

Evening all,

I’d like to harness the power of the F Type hive mind to decide on the best way forward.

My 66 plate R AWD required a new engine. The local dealer got it overnight a few weeks ago and started the rebuild.

Unfortunately they stripped the threads on the front drive shafts when they removed the hubs The left hand one is on back order with no ETA available. I’ve escalated it with JLR and they are scouring the planet for a replacement part supposedly.

I’ve spoken to the Jag extended warranty and asked them about alternative solutions, like a used part - which I’ve found. They’d be happy as long as it’s a genuine JLR part and they’d cover it under my extended warranty, as long as it’s in good condition.

I’m tempted to go down this route, as they’d have been re fitting 8 and a half year old parts had they not had the issue with the thread.

So it’s a choice between a used part and waiting months, potentially, for a brand new part.

Sorry for the long read. For those still with me, as the title suggests, thoughts appreciated.

If the choice is a used part or no car for months, I'd go for the used part. Assuming it's in decent condition, it should be at least as good as the one that was destroyed.

JLR will get a proper ETA for back ordered parts if the vehicle is off road (VOR) as it clearly is. This is above the ‘We’re looking’, process. They contact the parts maker for dates. I know the process as I had a RR off road with broken turbo, no stock, no ETA, which then became 4 weeks and ended up less..

If the ETA is more than a few weeks and the spare fitted and labour is all warranted, then I’d take 5he spare with no concerns and be back on the road. No reason to doubt parts that are unlikely to wear in the lifetime of the car.

^^ agree with that.
Having waited for a new supercharger nose for my V8 the unknown delay changed to 11 days relatively shortly afterwards.
Using the used one wouldn't cause me any concerns and I very much doubt a manufacturer would cover under warranty a repaired part by a 3rd party.

do they not have any ftypes for sale? I'd be making them take a drive shaft off one of them and rectifying their mistake

Thanks for the replies.

I’ve sourced a second hand part from Green Parts. Excellent service. Delivered by their own staff, so it’s not been kicked about a depot by a random courier.

I have an agreement with Jag Extended Warranty that they’ll cover the part after the first 1000miles. Basically to prove it wasn’t faulty when installed. Going to a local JLR specialist in Penicuik (also excellent), to let them have a look before I drop it off at the dealer.

With a bit of luck the Big Cat will be back on the road at some stage next week.
