Do I have a tracker?

Hi All

I own a 2017 F Type R Coupe AWD, bought used in Feb last year. I’ve always assumed it didn’t have any further security features other than the standard alarm.

However today as I was disconnecting and reconnecting the battery (to resolve a battery drain issue caused by Jaguar servicing it on Tuesday and not disconnecting their OBD device properly, well known fault around these forums and Jaguar were clueless on the phone, thank you forums) - a few mins later I got an email from “Trackstar” :

“ IMPORTANT: Operating on behalf of Jaguar Land Rover InControl

Hello,

We are writing to you in regards the Jaguar F-Type VRM: (my reg) and the tracking device located within the vehicle, which we monitor.

The device on this vehicle appears to have been the subject of an alarm. As such we need to clarify the reason for the alarm. If the vehicle is safe and secure no action is needed. Should the vehicle be stolen or a problem you feel we should know about, please respond to this email or call us on 0345 600 4999

Kind regards,”

I’m certainly not paying any sort of monthly fee for a tracker, and it wasn’t in the spec sheet when I bought the car - does the car have a tracker or similar device I don’t know about? How else would Trackstar know I disconnected the battery?

Would be great to know as I can add to my insurance policy and probably bring the premium down, but seems too good to be true.

Any insights welcome, thanks!

Disconnecting the battery would trigger the car to send a message to InControl as it thinks it might be being stolen (that's what Service Mode is for!). If you have the Remote app you can see if there are any valid subscriptions, which maybe a previous owner had paid for.

I just rang the provider who sent me the alarm email - turns out it was indeed a previous owner who paid for a service, which is valid on the car until mid 2027, happy days!
