chrome trim around quarter light loose

My 2022 F Type Coupe:

Newbe here, bought my 2 ltr coupe recently. She will be 3 years (4500 miles) old later this month so manufacturers warranty expires. I note the chrome trim around quarter light is comming adrift by where it meets the door. I gather this isnt a simple fix. Is this covered by manufacturers warranty ?

Im probably going for extended as its only had JLR services and its in on 16th for a pre extended warranty so wondering whether I can insist they sort chrome trim under current warranty.

Thanks for any input

Regards
Robin

Yes, your manufacturer warranty will cover it but you had better get it viewed and confirmed by a JLR dealer before the warranty expires. The Jaguar extended warranty “does not” cover such items.

I recently fixed mine myself (out of manufacturer warranty and my Jag extended warranty doesn’t cover it and Jag dealership quoted me £££££ to replace the trims). It’s a fiddle and takes time to do and you have to be meticulous and also careful not to bend, buckle, warp or break the metal trim, but it cost me just a few quid in materials and about 3 hours of my time. Happy to talk you through exactly how I did it if you need.

Our black pack trim started to lift on the passengers side at 22 months old. It was fully replaced under the initial three year warranty period, so act quickly if still in warranty period.

Had mine replaced last year, within 3 months of new, but it is back to be done again next month. Apparently the technicians hate them!
Also, check the bonding in the boot gutter- mine getting attention at the same time as the quarterlight trim.

This issue is known to come back and I remember seeing cases where people had this trim part replaced multiple times and just got the same problem again after a while. There are some theories about this being due to some minor body flex in this area. Also, obviously whatever glue JLR and the dealers are using for that trim piece doesn't cut the mustard.

Depending on how (in)competent the staff of the dealer doing the replacement is, there's also a risk that they'll cock up other things in the process like the alignment of the rear quarter window or different seals.

That said I'd be in two minds about having that whole trim piece replaced instead of just fixing it myself like Doc did above. Seems like quite a few people fixed it themselves successfully. Since it's under warranty and if you trust the place that will do the job it's still probably worth it having it replaced but I'd keep an eye on that everything else is properly refitted.

good advice and thanks all. Ive had classics mostly so readily fixable myself, most recently a cream convertible MGA.

As the Jag is new (to me) and its only done 4500 miles I thought best use the warranty as is and am expecting to get the extended one too....just as a precaution till Im more familar with the car. Im hopeing that I wont be needing any warranty work post this too but Ill have to wait and see.

It was serviced by JLR last week and despite all the cuddles etc no one reported this trim issue so Im extra cautious now.

Ill report how well its been done and obvs if the fix lasts.

FWIW took it in today for a check on quarter light trims and JLR said yep not just drivers side both need doing, under warranty. They are ordering parts. Anything I should check to verify it's done properly; I'm pretty handy so the obvious check is easy and tips on anything special to look out for ?

This is my thinking on the matter too. My driver's side trim was lifting the day I collected the car. I'm weighing a simple DIY fix against a warranty repair. I generally don't trust dealers to do a great job!

I'd take photos of the inside area around the small windows and check that everything looks exactly the same afterwards. There's a small rubber trim piece that covers a screw on the B pillar that sometimes is forgotten after such a job. Also pay attention to any new wind noise around the small windows after the job, which can be a sign of bad alignment.

3M VHB tape. It is important to clean off all old tape / adhesive under the trim before sticking it back down using the VHB tape. Some heat also encourages good adhesion. Care is required to make sure that it is stuck down properly aligned first time because the bond of the VHB tape is strong!

Update, 6 weeks wait for replacement chrome trim quarter light, work done by approved Jag JLR dealer. On inspection I noted that the front door glass and the quarter light galss did not align, i.e. the front door glass did not line up with the rer quarter glass notably i could even see light between the two with window closed. This was apparent on both sides. Returned to JLR dealer and pointed out, ok, we'll sort. A few days later call from dealer all done and correct and inspected. Ok I go in and check. Oh I note there now some trim missing at the rear of the quarter l;ight inside the cat=r, I can even see metal fixings that should be covered there so obvs a part is now missing. More apologies...dont you inspect the workbefore calling customer. We will orderpart and will call.

I guess the feedback on this is as forewarned earlier in post, best check alignment, rubber seals and all other bit repalced before accepting work completed.

I did point out that Im no mechanic and if I can see these errors in seconds why didnt JLR.....Luckily on warranty....

Good advice.
I had mine replaced a year ago, and heard a rattle during my return journey home... found a small piece of interior trim from the very back of the quarter light in the passenger footwell! Fortunately easy to press into position.
Trim to be replaced again, as soon as the parts arrive!
