Choosing between Main Dealer and Specialist Trader : F-Type R

Hi , I am looking at two 2014 F Type R's both similar cars (RWD) and I would welcome feedback on whether "condition" or "Warranty" is more important ?

Main Dealer - 3 owners, 30,000 miles - Full service history & 12 MOT - 12 Warranty and MOT warranty - will be full serviced as part of sale - but no sun roof

Specialist Dealer - 1 owner , 30,000 - Full service history , 3 months warranty only - great condition (no sticky buttons and brand new michelins P4S all round) - Sun Roof included

Both cars are priced within £500 or each other - so is a Jaguar warranty more important with this age of car over having a sun roof with careful owner

Any thoughts ?

I doubt a main dealer will be adding an as new type warrentee to a car thats 8yrs old TBH. Go with the car that yr happy with as both are just car traders, 1 just has a contract to sell jaguars new. If yr that worried then buy a new cheaper car with 7yrs warrentee or take out a private warrentee. IHMO if its not gone wrong by now then yr fairly safe if you look after it properly and I mean properly, not the extended servicing most cars are done too. Check the diffs dry, no rattles or broken trim, vents work, all the buttoms work and no noticeable paintwork overspray.

If it’s being sold as Jaguar Approved Used it will have a very robust warranty pretty much equal to a new car.
However, their 165 point checks are sometimes not precisely followed - check tyre tread depths are reasonable to your expectations.
It also means you can extend the warranty (and European breakdown cover and accident assistance) up to 10 years or 100k miles.
Decide if this is important to you or you would rather take your risk on any repairs. Main Dealers labour rates tend to be around £200p.h. but a good independent will be nearer half that.
I would ask for a print out of all warranty work done on the car to help you decide which way to jump - but don’t lose one of them in the meantime.
Armed with that information and the fact that the dealer one is without the glass pano roof (which is a must have for a lot of people buying the coupe) you should be able to negotiate a 2 year warranty - this is what the cars used to come with before JLR decided it was costing them too much.
Hope this helps and let’s see some photos when you get your chosen cat home.

Personally on a 9 year old car I'd buy on condition, not based upon a warranty or the JLR badge of the seller, (provided the indy has a great Trustpilot or similar reputation). You've got £1,000 of tyres on the indy car, so are easily in credit if you want to buy your own warranty. Consumer law gives you total protection on faults for the initial months so not such a big risk.

Another big factor in my mind would be the JLR car with 3 owners. You'll be the 4th and selling next to the 5th. Of course you can argue such cars sometimes get passed around as weekend rides.

I purchased my MY14 from a specialist 5 years+ ago and have never regretted it, although I did get a JLR warranty transferred to me. Faults were covered under consumer law by the seller, not warranty.

I don't see any F-Type 2014 R's in used approved stock.

If it is used approved from Jaguar main dealer then it will come with 1yr used approved Jaguar extended warranty and you can ask for that to be extended to 2yrs as part of the deal. (ask nicely). As long as the warranty starts before the cars 10th birthday then it is valid for the remaining term of the policy.

Of course that doesn't mean its the right one to buy!

Personally, I'd go on condition. For approximately the same price I'd go for the 1 owner car with PS4S' and panoramic roof. From your description it sounds well looked after.

Thanks for the feedback and advise , I hadn't realised that you get Jaguar to extend the warranty (subject to checks and asking nicely) to as long as the car hasn't done more that 100,000 miles and isn't over 10 years old

I switching out my TVR Griffith 500 and also my GSXR750 , so it is a big change from old fashioned to a more modern technology - I am hoping that the "R" will have some of spirit of the TVR but without some of the faults - although I have fixed pretty much everything over the past 14 years

Will post some pictures , once a deal on the "R" has been done

Thanks

^^ This…

Main dealers tend to focus on younger stock. More profit in it for them.
I can only see four models, from 2016 on the approved used site.
An approved used warranty is worth having for the first year for peace of mind even if you ditch it after twelve months. It also shows the dealership has some confidence in its product and is likely then not to know the car’s history.

I also take some comfort that a dealership vehicle may not have been a test mule for back street heroes. The F-Type is a very complex vehicle with electronic systems that don’t stand up well to folk who don’t know what they’re doing.
