Cheap fix for broken exhaust bypass valves

Got final refusal to fix to my broken exhaust bypass valves under warranty. Jag Bristol wanted £2600 to replace… So decided to see if I could at least stop the rattle.

Pulling the rear silencer off my v6s is easier than thought. Undid the two clamps then gave a wiggle by pulling up and down on tail pipes. Trick is to lift up behind the rear balance, gives room to pull sleeves apart. Not too heavy just needed a pair of ramps to get high enough.

Valves are actuated with a vacuum cylinder and cam . It’s the shaft on the butterfly valve that breaks.

My valves were always stuck shut I.e quiet so I did try wiggling them free and I think it’s doing this wrong that finally fatigued the shaft.

In hindsight should have removed the exhaust and pushed the butterflies so didn’t put so much torque on the thin shaft.

I managed to get the broken bits apart by removing the circlip from the back of the pivot.
Leaving me with a wiggly butterfly valve. Decided the best cheap solution was to try and fix the flap in a single position.

Found that the hole for the shaft was 5mm so decided to tap with m6 thread.

Then used a screw with the last few threads removed and a lock nut.

Then twiddled the valves til full open and tightened up. Worked a treat

Refitted and took out for a drive. Rattle gone and Holey Moley was louder. Massive pops and rasps. Hilarious 😂

So much. I bottled it, took off and dialed back to 1/4 open

Obviously a one way trip but if all else has failed then seems to be a great salvage.

Obviously the exhaust button on longer works.
Also did leave the valves connected as think run off manifold vacuum and didn’t want to have an air leak…

Hi

Good fix. I had same issue and frankly refused to pay £2.5k to replace backbox when actual box was fine apart from one broken butterfly spindle.
After some research found mod-stock.co.uk
They replaced both valves with nice shiny longer lasting stainless valves at considerably less than £2.5k

I opted for the valves plus internal box modification and it was £750 all in on an exchange basis and I could not be happier. This was about two months ago.

What is it that they actually do as part of the internal box mod out of interest?

Modifying an exhaust system is a big deal when it comes to car insurance, they would probably refuse cover if you told them.

They do something to slightly tweek the sound / flow. It sounds a bit deeper from before but not hugely so, ie it’s not a case of being a rabid snorting monster just a slightly better note. More importantly the valves actually work on the button.

I struggle with all the effort to do this and create an non performing system. You lose the ability to either control it manually, nor for the system to be able to breath as designed at higher levels of speed and/or throttle.
Totally agree that the cost of a new backbox is very high, but pretty easy for a custom exhaust shop to fit new valves into the pipe and thus retain one of the great features of the F Type.
Not a modification that concerns insurers, just a repair.
