Ceramic maintenance prices

Evening folks!

Whilst I've been lurking here for some time, it was time for me to sign-up as I look to purchase an F Type over the next couple of weeks.

After much research, test driving, and deliberation, I've come to the conclusion my next motor will be an R Coupé on an MY15, MY16 plate.

I'm incredibly excited, and franticly searching all sources on a daily basis.

I've come across what appears to be an incredible amount of car for the money, but with carbon ceramics which leaves me a little nervous about maintenance costs.

I won't be throwing the car around a track, well not very often, and I don't think I have a need for them. I did however catch a thread several months back talking about ceramic pads at £900?!

I wonder if any of you have any direct ownership/maintenance experience of ceramics, and just how steep they can be to keep pads updated and ultimately if needed, replace the discs.

The particular car I'm looking at has 20K on the clock, I plan on owning for a couple of years, maxing at around 7K a year.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

No personal experience of CCBs, but have read posts on the US forum that people actually swap their CCBs for steel rotors for tracking the car, and only use the CCBs on the road. The ceramic rotors are supposed to be good for 100,000 miles, but cost around £10k to replace! My advice - if you can find a nice R without CCBs grab it!

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search!

Thanks so much for the response.

Yeah, perhaps the discs themselves may not prove to be much of an issue if I only put 15-20K on the clock, but the pads do leave me nervous!

Maybe I need to move on from this one... Maybe...

I have CCB on my motor and love them. Yes if they go wrong or need changing they can be expensive but like SCM said they should last 100,000 miles. As the brakes/pads last much longer and If your only looking at having the car for a couple of years I doubt your pads will need replacing but it all depends on how you drive the car/ how it has been driven in the past. Also they look amazing and have no brake dust. Food for thought :D

@Scenes - Great choice of model, lightest of the V8's and RWD = FUN!

Apart from bragging rights and looks, CCB's are a totally unnecessary extra expense.

Speaking on this subject to the guys that thrash the living daylights out of F-Types at the likes of Millbrook proving ground etc, they all, without exception recommended steels, even for track use.

Stick in a decent set of pads, I use what the Yanks use, Porterfield R4-S's, and bingo you hit the sweet spot.
They take a wee while to warm, but are nice and progressive, unlike snatchy, soft and dusty as hell OEM's.

For the track, if you ever did take some brave pills, they are more than sufficient.

Evening, thanks so much for the responses all.

The car I was looking at with CCB’s sold, shortly after I decided I definitely wanted steels. Pleased for whoever picked it up though, it was immaculate black berry model.

Tomorrow I’m hoping I’ll finally commit, I’m going to see three cars in total, and I’m hoping one will melt my heart when I see it. However, there’s a very high probability all three could and I’ll be contemplating for several hours before pulling the trigger.

I’ll report back if any decisions are made, and I’m looking forward to being part of the community here.

So, the inevitable happened, and I'm now torn between two cars after today's day trip.

The first, in white, is 4 months overdue its latest service, but full Jag history through to 2020. It was in good condition:

The second, red, has a full history but the most recent was completed by indie. It's paintwork was slightly more swirled/scratched, but nothing I don't think a good detail would resolve. It's also got 8000 less miles, but is £1500 more.

Both have pretty standard warranty's in place, struggling to make a call between them. I guess I'm in for a long sleepless night of overthinking...

Have you checked into feedback on the 2 dealers?
That can tell you a lot based upon prior customer experience, post delivery service, issue resolution, etc.

Yeah, they both have decent feedback albeit in different guises.

One is a specialist provider, been in business 20 years stocking some stunning classics.

The other is a Sytner BMW, one of the largest in the north, feedback seems to be OK.

Why rush?...It's near winter time, so it's not like you are missing much.
Why not bide your time, check out private sales?
FWIW Red F's are slightly faster than White ones (and don't show up the brake dust so much)! ;-)

Surely the brake dust showing depends on the finish of the wheels, not the body colour?

OEM pads deposit dust everywhere, and on the wheels. I'm surprised you've not noticed it on the back of the car?

I thought that was from the exhaust! Anyway, I tend not to use brakes as that just wastes fuel.

Good point Tel.

In honesty, the reason I had a slight jiffy on was my current car which I’ll be part ex, is due for MOT end of Jan, and I know there’s a decent chunk of work to be done, probably £500-700 worth.

I was quite adamant I didn’t want to have to pay that when I knew I was changing it, but now you’ve got me thinking, what’s 500 quid in the scheme of things to wait a couple of extra months for the perfect car?

I’m still mulling, I still may well make a quick call, but you’ve definitely got me thinking.

Just come across this, which might be of interest ...
