Car wakes up randomly

Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a different situation with the car waking up differently than I've seen described in other threats.

Hazard light, turns off immediately or within a few minutes after shutting the car off, so I don't think I have the classic. Something was connected to the OBD2 port and needs to be reset.

What will happen is I will notice on my phone. I will randomly see connected to Android auto, if I then look at the car immediately the hazard light will be lit, even though it was off previously.

Does anyone know is the phone connecting doing this or is the car turning on and then the phone sees it and then tries to connect.

My battery is healthy according to a check I just did and although I get the low battery message sometime, the car really does always start.

An important detail to add is I recently got a new upgraded head unit installed, so that could be the cause too but I am not sure

I did see many threads on this but none of that matches specifically of the car just randomly turning on,

Also want to add the hazard light illuminates but other than that the head unit doesn't turn on. The lights don't turn on, it's just the hazard triangle

Thanks for your help

When the car is double locked a phone will not connect.

It would appear this is linked to the head unit upgrade.

Thanks, I've tried double locked and it makes no difference, so you think this is definitely the car and not the phone initiating it?

Typically the way bluetooth works is the phone is always looking for something it knows (or looks every few seconds at least).

The other thing, ie car in this instance but could be headphones, isn't listening when it is off so can't get woken up by the phone. When the car, or headphones, are turned on and start transmitting bluetooth then the phone suddenly sees it and connects.

Therefore I assume it is the car that is waking up and you only realise due to the phone connecting, rather than the phone waking it up

It is definitely something to do with the third party head unit.

When the car is locked with standard setup the car is asleep and a phone with Bluetooth on, would not connect nor wake the car up.

Thanks for the I talked to the installer and he's going to get in touch with the manufacturer of the head unit and if he gets nowhere I'll bring the car in and he'll look at it, maybe it is a loose wire or something.
Interestingly sometimes it goes days without doing this and then it will do it kind of like clockwork every 4 hours, if I turn Bluetooth off it never happens but I just assume that it's still happening. I just don't see the connection on my phone.
I must say though I'm very happy with the update to the head unit with Android auto and I added some cameras, definitely worth the hassle

It's not a daily driver if that matters, I do get the low battery warning sometimes. However, I think I got that before the head unit was replaced

Maybe a good idea to get a battery maintainer if you use the car infrequently - low voltage can give rise to all sorts of spurious glitches that are impossible to trace (apart from low battery, of course!).

What do you mean by upgraded head unit? If it's some after market kit it sounds like it has been connected in some odd way which allows it to get power from the car and wake things up even if the car is off. The UAD interface I have in addition to my original head unit gets its power through the head unit so it can only run when the head unit is awake.

I had an aftermarket 10.5 in installed in the car, when I say wake up I mean only the hazard triangle appears to be on the screen does not turn on, nor can you actually connect to Android auto it just attempts to do it.
The installer is getting in touch with the manufacturer to see something is going on, he suspects that maybe the Bluetooth module is not completely turning off, but they're not sure.

It does not happen all the time, as an example, I parked the car on Friday and hasn't happened since.

It also seems like when it happens the hazard triangle will light up and then go off again in a few minutes so it doesn't stay on as long as to drain the battery. It truly is an odd issue.

Here is the unit

Just wanted to add a little bit more information, if I go to the car without the key and press the button on the door handle the hazard light lights up immediately, which I assume is normal, it will then go out after a few minutes
Now if I approach the car without the key, press the button with my phone in my hand, it will immediately start to connect to Android auto, let me know if that means anything to anyone or if the same happens to you

Just wanted to circle back on this, I ended up replacing the battery and it hasn't happened since then.

I was getting the low battery for the longest time but just ignored it thinking it was not a real message.

An interesting addendum to this is that my auto start stop never worked since the day I got the car, as soon as I replace the battery now auto start stop works, so I guess there was enough juice to start the car but not enough juice to let the auto start. Stop risk, draining the battery and not restarting.

Pattern was so incredibly specific, if the car sat for 1 or 2 days nothing would happen but immediately after sitting for 48 hours the car wakes up every few hours, the car connecting to my phone was just a symptom, the car woke up with or without amy phone present or near

I even turned my phone off and placed it inside a Faraday envelope to make sure the phone was not initiating it
