Buying Advice on the Undercarriage.

Hello. I think this is the best place for some advice & appreciated in advance.

I am currently in the market for a 2 seat sports car aiming at a Cayman 981 S. However, I have taken quite some interest in the F-Type V6S as an alternative to the Cayman, as it is less common & feels/looks more special(IMO). Above all, it really does look to be so much more value at certain prices.

Now, I have seen a 2015 white F-Type convertible(I prefer a Coupe, especially for the boot space for road trips) with red leather interior. Very well equipped with Sports heated memory seats, Meridian sound, front/rear parking + rear camera etc at 36000 miles for the price of £25K. That seems like a lot of car for the money.

It does have some touches that need attention, like the HVAC controls have lost parts of the silver trim/some scratches, a worn start-stop button, driver's side bolster needs some love(not torn & the rest of the leathers are fine) etc. which maybe you can guide me for replacements. Will definitely want to replace the media screen with a 10.25" CarPlay/Android Auto.

But, my main issue with UK cars is the unfortunate amount of rusted components of the undercarriage, which here in Malta cars don't suffer. So, if the time comes to sell, will be a deterrent.

I know certain braces etc can be removed. What do you suggest can be done to eliminate the rust around most of the components; are there any chemicals that can brake down the rust properly & then treat accordingly to keep rust away? I know Lanoguard helps prevent rust but first the rust needs to be eliminated.

BTW, if anyone has anything around that price, I'd love to hear from you!

Cheers, Maurice.

Here are two excellent products that I use and can recommend to treat the underbody braces.

After removing any loose paint and rust, dirt, grease, salt etc, apply the Hammerite Kurust to the affected areas which will transform the rust to a stable surface. After a short while it will turn the rust to a blue/black colour.

Then apply the Hammerite Smooth Black after approx 3 hours. Although it says “No need to prime or undercoat”, using the Kurust beforehand gives even greater protection!

That is excellent advice & very much appreciated.

In the meantime, I have learned that most of the subframes/braces can be removed & either treated as you suggest, or even powder coated. These are good solutions.

I'll keep looking as I have seen some that are rusted all over; drive shafts, drop links, sway bars etc. But now that I have got a feel & more educated about these cars, I have even found a couple that have just the above mentioned subframes/braces that need attention.

👍

Yes, the front and rear braces can be removed.
With regard to powder coating there are better options i.e the Hammerite products I posted and also those explained here...

I’m sure the right car will come along for you soon and hopefully without too much underbody corrosion!
