blinking red light on speedo when car locked

I've had my car for 5 wonderful years, and it has probably only been left outside overnight a handful of times. Anyway due to a plastidipping frenzy on my new toy I have had to leave the F Type on the driveway tonight. As I was walking behind it in the dark I noticed a red flashing light on the dash. It isnt a key proximity light because it flashes whether I have the key or not. It flashes maybe every 5 seconds

But when I unlock the car and get in, the flashing stops. It is on the speedo, I think.

Is it the immobiliser/alarm light, or is my car going to explode? all I can find onliine is that red lights are not good lights.

Any help appreciated.
 
It shows the car is alarmed. Most modern cars have such a light (even my 2001 Nissan Almera!).

I have the same.
When i set the alarm, the red led on top of the dash in the windscreen would flash.
Now that doesn't light up, instead i have a flashing red light on my speedometer.
I think this change happened when my battery died a while ago?
