Air Conditioning

Hi all,

So glad to see the forum back up and running! Just in time for my AC woes.

I went to have a recharge today but it turns out I have quite a bad leak. The little indi garage didn't want to/couldn't do a dye check.

I've heard some horror stories of repairs costing circa £3000! Car is MY 2015.

Is there anything I can check myself? Does anyone have a layour diagram of the AC system? By no means a mechanic but can pretty much put my hand to most things given some info.

Update**

Had a mobile AC repair guy come out today, system was infact fully charged.

He plugged diagnostic tool in and went into the AC software and manually activated the compressor. Hey presto the AC worked absolutely fine.

Disconnected diagnostic tool, tested it a few times then it stopped working again.

He then reset everything on the software and we tried again. This time it seemed to have done the trick but we were both left stumped.

Has anyone else come across this before?

So the AC compressor in my 2016 V6S wasn’t working when I bought it. The garage replaced a split pipe and it seemed ok. But it wouldn’t maintain the cold. They decided it must have a fault in the compressor which made it intermittent and replaced it.
Looking on T’web these compressors have a dodgy valve thingy that goes. No idea if mine was this, they just changed the whole jobby.

I have read about this, its the dps that bolts in the side. If mine starts playing up again I think I may have a go at changing

How did you test the functionality?

My interior temperature sensor is broken. Meaning it will intermittently report -27°C, -40°C - I checked this with the SDD software. So if you select any other temperature than "low", even 16°C, the car will start heating. I just wanted to mention there can be different types of failures.

If the AC definitely doesn't cool, you can check this service bulletin regarding the mentioned DPS valve:

Hi Centax,

The mobile AC guy plugged a diagnostic tool in and managed to override the AC to engage. It worked a treat for a few hours and has subsequently stopped working again now so im leaning towards this DPS valve now. Something I might try and tackle myself. Thanks for the link.

Hi Philip,

There are 2 ports. Low pressure is close to the bulkhead in the engine bay. High pressure is located underneath a strut brace in the engine bay closer to the front of the car, as you look at the front, to the right of the engine.

I've finally found the aircon leak after getting a UV torch off amazon. Mobile Air Con guy clearly didn't look that hard, I remove the plastic trim at the top of the radiator/fan to see into the condenser and found the connections stained with dye.

I can see the replacement is £95 online, with the fact I know there is no gas in the system id like to attempt changing it myself. Has anyone seen this done previously, imagine its a front bumper off job? Could I drop it from underneath and would anything else need removing?

Glad you found the leak.
I'd leave it to a specialist to swap out the components as the gas is nasty stuff and although very low it will likely have some left in the system.

You're probably right, but I like to tinker haha. The Icarsoft enabled me to view the pressure sensor readings which was useful. Handy to have for future as the car is now fast approaching 11 years old.
