Active exhausts..

Quick question...

Are the active exhausts a software generated noise?
Genuine overrun, exhaust tuning?
Or a combination of the two?

Reason I ask is that I run the active exhausts everyday (and guilty of overdoing it) and wonder if I could damage or wear out the exhausts system?
OR
is it ok to keep doing if it is just software and it will not damage the exhaust system?

Jagman

Hi Jagman

it's mechanical - there is a motorised valve that opens up to effectively make the exhausts "straight through". When the valve is closed the exhaust gases are forced through extra silencing chambers.

so I guess the motor will wear out eventually, but the way I look at it, if you exercise the motor frequently you'll minimise the risk of the valve sticking in a shut position

Hi,

The following link explains how it all works:-

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mmo4oy6tsqmy9vl/AACuZWO-6Ej7hxfB9AKxhPOna/jaguar%20f-type%20docs/active_exhaust.pdf?dl=0

With due acknowledgement to fellow forum member Tel who first posted this information.

Regards.

Scoobydoo

No, you won't damage anything. The engine would far prefer to be on something more free flowing than a quiet restrictive system anyway.

The acoustics are fixed, the internals are a tuned work of art:

The overunn pops and crackles are 'induced' by the ECU. The fuelling calibrations are altered, in other words, it leans the mixture a tad. I have done with some of the carbs on my bikes, to produce an overrun 'pop'.

The exhaust flaps are opened and closed using a vacuum pump mounted on the left hand side behind the passenger seat.

Dammit, as I was tying this Scooby beat me to it!

Thanks for the detailed explanations guys and the in depth information Tel.
I didn't know the system was that sophisticated!

99% goes over my (non mechanical) head but it's good to know I can keep making a racquet without having to worry about it :)

Many thanks.

Jagman.
