2017 Type R 1st MOT

Had the 1st MOT done on car today, at my local garage that I always use. He let me have a good look under the car, the cross braces are pretty good. I will need to give them a light brushing & a coat of paint at some point. The concerning thing was I got an advisory on O/S front tyre. Worn on inside edge. It is well worn but not illegal yet. The other side I had replaced with a new tyre yesterday because I had dinged a boulder at the side of the road last year. It had a small bulge in it. That tyre was pretty much like new at around 5mm left all across. The right one has about the same tread left apart from the inside edge. The car has done 20168 miles. So not sure if the fronts are original as iv'e only done 2000 miles since I bought it.
Question is has anyone else had this problem. Obviously the alignment is out & needs sorting. Just wondered, am I the only one or is it common on the Jag.
Steve.

I've got my first MOT in a couple of weeks. Only done 6500 miles so tyres shouldn't be an issue, but I'll check the wear anyway and report back.

I would get a 4 wheel alignment done not just the tracking. With the state of our roads you only need to drop in a large pot hole or jump up a kerb to knock something out.

I'm on 18,900 miles now and 3yrs old shortly and I'm still on the original fronts which are just under 3mm and wearing evenly.
The rears are on the second set and 5mm left and again wearing evenly.
So definitely get tracking and alignment done/checked.

From that then maybe the fronts are the original ones. But the roads around here are terrible. I have hit a few holes so maybe just needs adjusting. The yound lad doing the MOT spent ages taking pictures of the car to show his girlfriend. I took some for him with the top down & him in it. Amazing it's the 1st time I have used the car since the back end of last year. Forgot about the looks you get & the tailgaters wanting to listen I guess. Dynamic always on.
:D :D :D

Yes definitely the 4 wheel full alignment, as tracking should pickup toe-in/out but the wear would normally be fairly equal across both tyres if toe-in/out is incorrect.

Unusual the worn tyre wasn't mentioned when you changed the other tyre yesterday!

I replaced all four tyres with PS4s at around 22,000 miles. Rears down to an even 2mm across the width, but the fronts had plenty of tread apart from both being very worn on the inside edges.

Four wheel alignment showed the front wheels had toe out, rather than toe in set. Which would have existed from when the car was delivered. Straight line stability did improve afterwards, but it wasn't night and day in terms of a difference. Although, I think the front tyre wear is more even now.

Do you go over a lot of speed bumps ? If you do and go over the middle of the ones that are about a metre square you are scrubbing the inner edge of the tyres as they force the tyre to deform. Just a thought.

Remember that any camber or toe wear will be exasibated also as it's a driven wheel in the front as well.

Phil the left front was changed because o a bleb in the side as already said. But the wear was pretty constant across it. No unusual wear at edge. So if eggs are eggs then probably the right front is out of line. I know they are fully adjustable. Will get it done . Still trying to sort the dam insurance out. They are wanting £1097 & that's with 5000 miles limit. Securely garaged & not a bad postcode. Think I need to shop around.

Wow Steve, that's a lot!, I pay that for dual car 6000 miles on the Jag garaged and 15000 miles on the Evoque driveway and which is declared modified!

Garaged is often more expensive than on the drive.
More damage is done driving in and out and things dropping onto it.
Theft is seemingly not the issue

Steve,

Try More Than, I paid £661.51 fully comp,

Kind regards,

Steve

I did a quote today at comparethe market. Cheapest was Tesco at £755. Lancaster are looking into the renewal as I should have 4 yrs no claims & it only showed 1. Awaiting the outcome. Obviously we will all get different quotes due to location etc. When I 1st insured it last year , they would not insure if not securely garaged. The company is XS Direct through Lancaster brokers. Wouldn't care just insured the other half's St line fiesta. My vivaro van . Next month it's the Ducati. Phew motors who needs em. Meeeee.

The wear on the inside of the tyre is not down to any dangerous points yet. Spoke to son in law who tells me to do the alignment I will have to have a new tyre fitted or the settings will be wrong. The miles I do a year will probably mean getting it done before the next MOT. The insurance company have not got back in touch yet with a quote. Does not run out until the 16th so plenty of time.
To cap it all I just had 2 new tyres fitted to the other halves Fiesta ST line. 205x40x17 Conti sports. Fitted Friday. She rang me Saturday evening to say sorry I have gone down a pothole & got a puncture.
I went to where she was & changed for the Space saver. Next morning looked at tyre. Wrecked & a small dink in the rim. So today had another new tyre fitted. The Co owner said when you go in the garage , have a look at my wheel. I hit a pot hole on Friday night. What a mess. Think he has a RS6. Picture.
Also I sent for a claim form last year for same as down a pothole. Council sent me the form & the 1st few lines are something like this. If you make a claim against us for damage to your vehicle due to road conditions. We will inform your insurance company that a claim has been made against this vehicle, & your insurance premiums may go up as a result. Bas--ards. So could not risk it. So looks like this time will be the same. Stick your hand in your pocket because the roads are stuffed & keep paying your Tax. Mine is £550.Smashed rim.jpgSmashed rim 2.jpg

Claiming for pot hole damage is a claim for compensation and not insurance related.

The full guide is here which covers everything.

I claimed against Hampshire County Council for damage to two tyres for my 2004 XKR some years back - they paid up promptly with no hassles. No mention of notifying insurance companies.

How does the council know what insurance company you are with. I know all insurance companies have a linked data base, but pretty sure councils don't have access to it. Scare tactic me thinks. Do you even have to give them your registration number? Picture of car with damaged wheel, pothole if possible & location so they can quickly have it repaired (dream on)
