2013 f type petrol access flap won't open

My 2013 3 litre V6S F Type can't go anywhere until I sort out the petrol filler flap which stubbornly won't spring open. I have telephoned Stratstones Jaguar Garage in Cardiff where I have the car serviced and they very unhelpfully say they can't look at the problem for 10 weeks.
Does anyone have any advice as to how I can open the flap. There doesn't seem to be any obvious rescue cable or such like. I really need to use the car on a weekly basis so unless I can fuel it, I am stymied. Has anyone else had to solve this problem?

In my convertible there is a cable in the boot adjacent to the filler cap area. I would imagine it's the same on a coupe.
 
Thank you. Mine is in fact a convertible but unfortunately there is no cable or any other device in the boot. I understand later models to mine such as yours were fitted with this rescue device. Mine has none and it looks daunting to remove the boot lining and I still wouldn't know whether I will find any assistance. Thank you for your advice.

If the car is unlocked it sounds like the mechanism has got stuck. Have you tried tapping it repeatedly at the "open" end to see if that frees it? Also try locking and unlocking repeatedly via the fob? Good luck!
 
I had something similar happen on my XF-R and was caused by the rubber cord (which is part of the cap retainer and connects between the cap and filler neck) being trapped. Method of release involved a slim plastic card, which could be silver, gold or black depending who you bank with, slipped between the flap and body work and being used to gently pry the flap out whilst jiggling the flap at the same time. Best done at home without the added pressure of being on a petrol station forecourt…
 
Thank you. Sounds like the potential fault. I have tried a credit card and even my railcard but to no avail apart from not doing a lot of good to tje paintwork.
The flap opens about an eight of an inch when I press the flap in the right place and I tried moving the card around the flap between it and the car body but nothing happened
Can you possibly describe precisely where on the flap you successfully sprang it open. Thanks.

On the opposite side to the hinge is where I think I pried as that’s where the release mechanism is. It may be worth squirting some GT85 or WD40 through a straw into that area in the hope that some goes down the release mechanism whilst locking/unlocking the car and/or trying to release the lid at the same time. A glamorous assistant or child labour may be required to assist should either be available
 
Thank you. I just tried where you suggest and applied more pressure than seems sensible but it still won't budge.
I'll try again in the light of the morning. First of all though I must ask my wife to assist me as my glamorous assistant. That should work. Thanks
I'm not sure that if I stripped the boot lining out and the wheel arch, I'll actually be any better off. It may well be down to brute force. Thanks for your help.

I certainly would not use brute force on the cap. It's very study and clearly designed to stop fuel theft. It's likely you'd damage the quarter panel, using any leverage. Credit card ideas won't work either as it's inboard.

Here's a link to a replacement which should give you some idea of the construction and a photo of mine with the pin engaged (locked), but flap open so you can see how it lies between the 8 & 9 o'clock position, inboard of the cover:
The convoluted rubber is a push to click shut and push again for the spring to push the cover open.

I'd start with wheel off and remove the arch liner.

You are such a kind gentleman. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness. I will send these details to my son and chat with him over the phone this evening. I can see I need somehow to put downward pressure on the convoluted rubber bit. But how? Your drawings are very helpful. I can see how it works.
I'll certainly let you know how I get on.
Incidentally I spoke to Jaguar customer relations this morning. They could not tell me whether there is access through the boot or wheel arch to some emergency release or other. If they can't tell me, there can be no hope.
I have been offered a slightly earlier appointment at Stratstones now but it is still only for 11 July.

Just received call from service manager at Stratstones. He has asked me to turn up tomorrow at 2.00pm. You can imagine how pleased I am. Thank you for your help

Result. Fingers crossed they can fix it quickly.
 
Glad the dealer has agreed an early appointment. The person on the phone making appointments will not know the required tricks to resolve such problems. The techs who see this sort of 'outside of the JLR manual' issue every day will have it sorted soon, or at least tell you what they have to do. Once open I'm sure they will want to fit a new mechanism, else could happen again.

Good to hear. I was quite surprised after you saying the earliest appointment you could get at Stratstone Cardiff was 11th July....especially with an important issue such as this.

I hope they don’t sting you too much for the job as main dealer rates are usually extortionate! Job done. Stratstones were wonderful today. Took it into their workshop and returned it15 minutes later fully sorted. It was just a fuse. In my efforts to analyse the problem I had been told there is no fuse for the petrol flap. That was incorrect information.
If this happens to anyone else check the fuse no.F34 .
Thanks to everyone who made big efforts to assist me.
All well that ends well.

Been following this thread, but couldn’t offer any advice so just lingered in the back ground 😂 fair play to Stratstones for sorting it out quickly credit where credit’s due in my mind

Thanks. I'm very relieved. Fab drive to Cardiff today with the roof thrown back. Makes me feel like a teenager again, though I can't really remember that far back

Excellent news and thanks for posting the outcome.

Just checked on https://www.ownerinfo.jaguar.com/ (MY16) and fuse No F34 10A Red ‘Fuel flap lock, Cubby box lock, Stowage box lock’ is located in the passenger side foot-well fusebox (bottom fuse in the screenshot).

Hopefully Stratstone didn’t charge you too much if anything at all?
