Where has the noise gone?

Hi all,

Wanted to post on here as a bit confused! For background I used to have a MY16 FType convertible V6S which I had for two years and loved. After the warranty was up I sold it and bought a TTRS which on paper you could argue is a better car and has been great but to be honest lacks the soul of the F-Type.

Anyway - 2 years down the line and I was planning to come back and have just came back from a test drive of a P450 Reims edition.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful car to look at, but where has the noise gone? I was expecting it to be a loud V8 (in my head it was going to be like a mustang or C63 or something) but to be honest it was pretty disappointing. It was probably a bit quieter than the RS (which is MY19 and also has the particle filter etc). When it got going it did make a nice noise but in general day to day driving it was so different to the old ftype.

I guess my question is when did they change. Was is to do with the particle filter or was it when the new shape came in.

Overall I am pretty gutted as I was so excited to come back to a Jag and own my first V8 but it just seems so much tamer than the old V6.

Am I missing something or is it just how things are now?

Thanks for your help!

I thought fuse 15 was for non switchable exhausts? This had a switchable exhaust which we played with during the test drive (and did make a bit of a difference but nothing compared to what things used to be)

I may be missing something though!

The GPF implemented in 2019 ruined with the exhaust notes. I drove behind a 2022 V8 this week, rolled the window down and could barely hear it the few times the driver floored it. It seems however that removing Fuse 15 brings it alive a bit more. I think you'll be better of with a MY17/18 if you're serious about noise like me unless you throw a lot of money removing the GPF, aftermarket exhaust...

So just found this:

This is way more like it! Can anyone confirm if this is what fuse 15 actually does (ie. Basically completely different to what the switchable button does)

I may see if I can blag the dealer to pull the fuse and have another drive. I REALLY want to make this work but I need some noise!

Thanks everyone for your help

Pulling fuse 15 works wonders on the P450.

It livens up the active exhaust significantly more than just pushing the button and gives a much louder and more visceral tone.

You'll also get more pops on liftoff, and lower down the rev range.

It's perhaps slightly exaggerated in that video due to the way the mic is picking it up. And it sounds like the driver is lifting off a lot to induce the crackles.

But that's the gist of it. It does make a significant difference and it's plenty loud enough.

So glad I bought a MY16 V6S as the exhaust noise is awesome…….👍

When I’m pressing the loud pedal I can’t stop smiling……😎😎😎

Given you said "When it got going it did make a nice noise but in general day to day driving it was so different to the old ftype" it sounds like fuse 15 will help for your situation.

AFAIUI, the gpf did reduce the overall noise so you won't get that back from fuse 15, plus there were changes to reduce the crackles. However if you are happy with the noise at higher revs then fuse 15 gives you that all the time by opening the valves all the time.

The exhaust valves to increase the sound normally open a X rpm (can't remember rpm but easy to find on this site) the switchable exhaust opens it earlier and dynamic opens them even earlier (scm knows the specific values), removing fuse 15 leaves them open all the time.

Therefore if you thought it was fine at higher rpms then removing fuse 15 gives you that all the time, if you thought it wasn't good enough at high rpms then go for an earlier model

Do a Modstock full internal rear box modification and that will give you a great orchestral sound then remove fuse 15 for the orgasmic chorus.

Thanks all. This is super helpful. Will try and see if I can get the dealer to pull the fuse quick and see how things goes. Hopefully my V8 Jag dream is not dead!

Just to wrap things up - we did the drive with fuse 15 and it was a totally different experience. Still not quite as mad as the old Ftype but definitely so much better than with the fuse in. Kinda makes a bit of a mockery of the switchable exhaust though as what’s the point if it still doesn’t open when you click it!

Thanks everyone for your help - so happy to be coming back to a Jag! Hopefully will pick it up next week!

Happy days! Glad you found here the answer you're looking for. Good luck and don't be a stranger! We got plenty of lookers coming here asking us questions then don't even bother thanking or updating the community. 😒
