Vibration when accelerating (70mph to 85mph)

Hello! New to the forums here, so hi everyone.

I’ve had my 2015 F-Type V8 R for just over a year and recently I’ve noticed a vibration (car has done 59k mikes). It’s bizarre because it only appears under hard, kick-down acceleration at around 70mph and lasts up to about 85mph then tails off. It feels like a shudder/judder from the rear of the car when it ‘squats’ down under acceleration.

Things I’ve done (which I know wouldn’t fix it, but thought why not try)
- rear diff oil change
- 4 wheel alignment
- 4 wheel balancing

I’ve just had it checked by a local garage who has confirmed that he felt the vibration too; that’s good I suppose. What’s bad is that he said there was nothing obvious he could see or feel under the car… the only thing he said was that there was slight play in the driver’s rear halfshaft at the diff end, and a small amount of oil misting but not an obvious leak.

The garage seemed reluctant to start stripping down to check further into the mechanicals (to check rear UJ and propshaft bearing), so I’ve left it for now. The car isn’t undriveable at all and at low speed, hard acceleration there is no vibration at all. A bit of a weird situation.

Has anyone experienced this at all? Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

I bet the balance of one of your wheels is off. I had the exact same issue with my previous car (TT), had the balancing done at 3 different places and the vibration was still there. Until someone recommended a garage called Hillam Tyres near Huddersfield (close to home actually). Their machine and technicians are well above average.

Every time I replaced tyres, I had to go back there so they could adjust the balance as people at National Tyres and similar do an OK job for family cars but their level shows when it comes to performance cars taken to higher speeds.

You can also search for places where they use a Hunter Road Force machine.

Thanks for the helpful reply - I had two new P Zeros about 2 months ago and balanced then. Might be worth another balance! Will keep it as an option, cheers

So on a more serious note :
Ensure your rims are not bent. Exceptionally easy to do on low profile tyres. Balancing to some extent can compensate, but not perfectly. Easy to check on the balancer with dual gauge. Had 3 of 4 bent on a previous Z4
If still not correct then ensure tyres have been fitted with dots on tyres and rims or valves matched
Thirdly I’d look at the prop-shaft balance
All can be typical for vibration you drive through

If your car has Pirelli tyres and you are near Burton On Trent then you can try Pirelli Performance Centre.

I always go there. Its how all garages should be!
They have the full wheel balancing and hunter alignment systems and all the correct homogation and tyre data.
