Ticking/rattling from top end of engine when cold

Hi guys
New to the forum and have introduced myself in the 'Introductions' section.
I am on the lookout for my first 'S' model and have so far viewed 4 cars...all very different in their own ways.
The thing that is bothering me is this ticking noise from the engine when cold.
I would say 'rattle' is too strong a description, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
I've been told that it's normal from a cold engine, but should disappear once the engine warms up.
The thing is, out of the 4 cars, 2 have had this ticking noise and 2 have been silent when cold.
Therefore I really need to know whether I should be ignoring it in my search, but would still like to know why some engines have it and some clearly don't.
What is causing it...noisy lifters? They're not hydraulic are they, or maybe they are?
Should I be concerned and should it put me off buying a particular car?
Thanks.

The v6 does not have hydraulic lifters and can create a ticking noise when cold which should disappear when engine is warm. Is more noticeable on a cold day and disappears quicker on a hot day.
Mine has done it from 6 miles (new) and now done 38,000 miles after 5 years and never used a drop of oil and no mechanic issues. I get dealer to check it every year and they say it is fine and have inspected supercharger and other components and no issues found. The ticking noise when cold has remained the same throughout ownership (not got worse).

As always, for me, a good service history rather than low mileage is a preference for me.

Hello ,i am in exact situation as you were. I am really close to buying 2016 V6 S AWD with 55 000 miles and the only problem is the noise when starting cold. It disappears after a while but i am worried. Did buy one with the sound?
Thanks
