Test drove a V6S today

I set out this morning with the intention of test driving a V8S roadster, one had just come into my local dealer so I picked up the phone first thing and tried to book a test drive. Unfortunately because the car was fresh in stock, it hadn't been prepped ready for sale.<div><br><div>Instead I was offered a test drive in the V6S demonstrator that they had just registered.</div><div><br></div><div>I took my 11-year-old son with me, the dealer was kind enough to give us the keys for a couple of hours so we had chance to test it in various different conditions ranging from a city centre in the sunshine, right the way through to a motorway in torrential rain.</div><div><br></div><div>I got to say I loved it, I have driven one before, but it was a rental car around the Alps which was epic, but I was worried in case it was a holiday romance and just wanted to know what one would feel like back in the real world.</div><div><br></div><div>Having just stepped out of an Aston Martin V8 the F-type felt very modern, very fresh and a very special place to be, to me it made the Aston Martin look antique in many ways and even though I only drove the V6 it felt to me like a better car than the Aston Martin - it really affirmed that I have made the right decision in selling the Aston to switch across to the F-type.</div><div>For me it's going to be a sunshine/weekend car only, so I wanted to make sure it felt special enough to justify having sat in the garage half the time.</div><div><br></div><div>I'm planning to go back and test-drive the V8 back to back with the V6S on Wednesday.</div><div><br></div><div>As it happens, last week I had booked a V6 to rent for 24 hours, I'm picking it up on Tuesday and intend to spend most of our 24-hour driving around to get a real feel for it, then when I finish with it I'm going straight back to drive the V8. I'm hoping the V8 doesn't disappoint as I really could do with the excuse to go for the bigger engine, but only if it does feel worth it.</div><div><br></div><div>I'd love to know anyone else's thoughts on comparing the two?</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

I tried both back to back, plus a couple of weekend rentals. I intended to buy a v8 but honestly loved the v6s far more driven, was no comparison for me. Ditto convertible v coupe. Coupe looks good but the convertible feels much more special. However it depends what you are looking for, I know others on here will feel the exact opposite. The v8 certainly is quick, we called it the starship enterprise, fitted with warp drive! Jess

<div><br></div><div>It does seem that V6s the is a very popular choice, this seems to be reflected in its stronger residual value, or at least prices being asked for them.</div><div>To me it seems to be a no-brainer when the difference might only be £4k in the used car market, but just a bit worried about the V8 feeling too quick for our little country roads.</div><div><br></div><div>To me a lot of the attraction is the noise, surely the V8 sounds better than the V6?</div>

V8 FTW<div><br></div><div>V6 will always be inadequate.</div><div><br></div><div>500PS will keep up with machinery twice its price</div>

It didn't to my ears - it's a little higher than most v8. Give it a whirl though - beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that ;)<br /><br />Ftw is right in that the performance of the v8 is exceptional value.<edited><editID>ajbh</editID><editDate>2016-05-22 20:12:00</editDate></edited>

I have driven both and the V6S sounded better than the V8 that I drove. Wasn't much different acceleration wise but the V8 was better mid range. The V6 Had superior balance though.<br />Steve.

<div><br></div><div>That's the first time I've heard someone say that they thought the V6S sounded better, I guess everyone is different with their own personal preference. I've watched a couple of side-by-side videos and the V8 sounds to have a deeper noise and I think more popping and crackling on overrun.</div><div><br></div><div>Planning to drive both in the next couple of days, so I guess I will find out for myself soon enough.</div>

They are personal preference. The V6s sounds better in my opinion and the sound is more present, more of the time.<div><br></div><div>For the roads the V8 isn't pushed enough in everyday driving. The V6 is more useable across more of the rev range. </div>

The V8 does sound good on the overrun but on the V6 you get a nice bang from the exhaust on the up change on exelleration. Both fantastic cars, just depends on what you want it to be.<br />Steve.

My husband and I both preferred the v6S sound to the V8, although part of that I think was some disappointment that the V8 didn't sound as good as we hoped, where the V6 3was better than expected. It was more the usability of the performance band on the v6S which sold us though than the noise, which honestly is good on both.
The trouble we had was getting to the right rev range on the v8 without being well into license/life and limb losing territory. It is fun, but I felt I'd have to take it on track to hear it at it's best, whereas my v6 is fun on the Tesco run. <edited><editID>ajbh</editID><editDate>2016-05-23 15:47:07</editDate></edited>

Testing both back to back on Wednesday, I'll make a decision as to which way I want to go after that. having come from a V8 I suspect I will end up going with another one, but absolutely loved the V6S drive yesterday and two the couple that I drove in the Alps 2 years ago.<div>Without a doubt ongoing for one, just need to make up my mind which.</div>

<p>Cool, let us know what you think after your road test. I'd actually really like to give the v8 another go tbh. Now I'm used to the SIZE of the F I wonder if I'd feel differently - we came out of a japanese drifter which feels like it weighs about half what the jag does, at the time even the V6S felt rather stately.</p><div> </div><div>Jess</div>

I am no expert but having driven a V6, V6S a 2 V8S cars recently I think the V6S sounds loud , sporty but mostly exhaust manufactured sound but you really hear the note of the engine on the V8 both sound great on the over run , you would be happy with both mate , but If you like the feel and sound of the extra power then the V8 but they are both serious Sports cars .<div>Give us a shout when you get one and we can meet up for a drink ;-)</div>

<div>
I Love the rear end look of the V8 but I also think to get it in the rev range to Enjoy that exhaust note is not so easy as the More usable range of the V6 .</div><div>I also feel that the V6 has more of a sports car sound and the V8 more of a Muscle car Sound'.</div><div><br></div><div>I Have driven both and also feel that the lighter engine and lower weight over the front Axle makes the V6 a better handling car around B Roads.</div><div><br></div><div>Having Said this I will still be considering the V8 and SVR when I buy my Next F Type but this will be more for that great V8 rear end Look . I think which ever your choice they are both fantastic cars .</div>

After driving both the V6S and then V8S back to back I came to the conclusion that the extra money was worth it and ended up buying/picking up my V8S on Thursday afternoon.<div><br></div><div>I just got back from a boys weekend where I took it down to Devon and spent a day driving over the moors and really getting to know the car. The sound of the V8 even without being stupid with it was just intoxicating as was the performance with plenty on tap when needed.</div><div><br></div><div> Don't get me wrong, I love the V6S ( fact I'm hiring one in Germany in a few weeks time to go and play in the Alps) However for me personally the V8 feels like a very different car and didn't feel too heavy which I thought it might.</div>

Thanks for the offer.<div><br></div><div>We are picking the car up in Munich and driving down to Davos for the first night, then heading over to Audermatt and spending our second night over that direction before heading back to Davos for the third night.</div>

<div><br></div><div>Thanks very much. Although I've been keeping my eye out since February, haven't actually really been properly looking until about 4 weeks ago when I parted with the Aston Martin. I genuinely can't believe how much better the Jaguar is than the Aston Martin was - granted, the Aston Martin with a slightly older car, but it felt an awful lot older when compared with the Jaguar.</div>
