My first F-Type Buying Advice

Great to be here and already learning a lot from what I’ve been reading in other posts and buying advice.

I’ve been looking at moving on from my Ford Fiesta ST3 (yes, embarrassing!) for a couple of years and have only recently discovered the F-Type. It’s a car I’d just never considered previously as I had no idea you could pick a used car up at such a good price.

Having done some research, some recommend the car with full Jag service history, others say just a regular history will suffice. Autotrader has some great V6 2017/2018 models whilst Jag dealerships have P300s priced around 29k which just seems far too expensive for the P300 spec.

I’m considering the P300 as the V6 is coming up £1200 more expensive in yearly insurance, and the P300 is only £200 more expensive than it is on my Fiesta. The P300 is also a big enough performance jump to what I’m driving now and I’d be driving the car as a daily so I’m looking for decent MPG. My Fiesta is currently hitting about 30-33 MPG (urban driving).

The main advice I’m seeking from this forum before buying:
- Are there any risks going with Trade Sellers on Autotrader vs Jag Approved Used?
- What should I be looking for when test driving or viewing a 2017/2018 model? (Other than the usual universal checks)
- What should I expect from a seller when purchasing - eg warranty length etc?

Generally any other advice regarding buying would be great that I may not have thought of - it’s been around 5 years since I’ve been through the buying process!

Many thanks in advance for any advice - I hope to soon be a proud owner and member of this community.

Given your car ownership history I reckon the P300 would be the perfect car for you. It would give you a great introduction to the F-Type without a lot of the costs associated with V6/V8 ownership. You'll find the performance more than adequate and have the superb looks. It's only petrol-heads that will know it's 'only' a 2 litre car.

A Jaguar service history is ideal but evidence of regular servicing is all that most future buyers would look for. When buying FJsh cars tend to command a premium, especially if sold through a Jaguar dealer. Often the best bargains are those sold by a recognised specialist - whether that be Jaguar specific or those dealing in Sports Cars generally.

Buying from any dealer gives you Consumer Rights Protection for 6 months - regardless of what 'warranty' the seller offers. Beyond that the best warranty is undoubtedly Jaguars own but others offer fairly comprehensive cover but at a price. Cheap generic warranties often have low individual and/or total claims limits. You might prefer to set aside a sum each month to build a war-chest for any unforeseen issues.

The internet is your friend when reviewing potential issues with this particular model. Before you see a particular car that you're desperate to buy it may be prudent to blag a couple of test drives so that you know what to expect.

Happy hunting

Thank you - this is useful to know. I visited a dealership yesterday but they had no F-Type’s in stock. They said stock is quite seasonal and they usually have an influx before a quiet period - they mentioned them usually selling fairly quickly so they don’t often have them sitting around. I’ll keep my eyes out as I certainly need to get in a couple and give them a test drive to get a feel for one!

I went for the P300 as its more than fast enough and I suspect the V6/8 would engourage me to get done for speeding.

Anyway mine is a 2022 coupe in BRG. I got it for £37K, yep not cheap but it had 1100 miles on clock, 1 owner (a lady) . I looked at Jag dealers and most of what they had in the P300 about that year was similarily priced and all had +20K miles. I took the chance on mine from small dealer as car was local and he knew owners. It had a Full Jag history so went for it. I agree that keep looking on internet and dont be put off if its not a Jag specialist or main, surely it the car/condition/ history etc that matters

That’s great to hear. I hear the 22’s are really nicely spec’s as well! I’m keeping my eyes out. Unfortunately nothing so far but maybe with the March plate changes there could be a few coming by on the market!
