Jaguar InControl App – Or Is It Out of Control? Help Needed!

So, in late August, after what felt like an eternity of searching, I finally bagged the F-Type of my dreams, ticking all the boxes—spec, color, model, and most importantly, within budget (barely!). Feeling pretty chuffed, I thought I’d take it up a notch and connect the car to the Jaguar InControl app—because who doesn’t want to remotely start their car and feel like they’re in a Bond movie, right?

Having previously owned a Jaguar XE, I was familiar with the app's many perks. So, naturally, I attempted to register my new F-Type… only to be greeted by a message informing me that the previous owner still had the car locked into their account. Annoying, but fine—I’ll just get it sorted, I thought. Famous last words.

I popped down to my local Jaguar dealership in Peterborough (Marshalls, for those wondering) on September 14th, armed with all the proof of ownership needed to reclaim my own car from this app-based purgatory. The receptionist kindly assured me it would take 2-3 days to clear. Easy peasy, right? Oh, how naive I was.

Fast forward a week, and guess what? Still not sorted. I rang them up, whereupon they insisted they’d get it done “as a matter of urgency” (cue laughter). Days passed, and the app was still convinced I was driving someone else’s car.

I called again and spoke to a very apologetic sales rep who expressed genuine confusion about why this wasn’t sorted yet. This time, she promised to do it with me while we were on the phone. “Finally!” I thought, some hope. She assured me everything was processed and I’d be able to add the car within 48 hours. Well, you guessed it—72 hours later, still nada.

By now, my frustration had reached new heights. I wasn’t just calling for convenience anymore—I was calling because the previous owner still had access to my vehicle! That means they could track its location, unlock it, and even start it! (So much for a "secure" luxury car experience, right?) Given the recent, shall we say, reputation JLR vehicles have with certain ‘interested parties,’ you'd think someone at Jaguar would be taking this a bit more seriously.

I hit them with my most serious, threatening tone over the phone (or at least, as threatening as you can sound while talking to someone from customer service). But alas, the problem still wasn’t fixed.

So, after going through the dealership rigmarole once more, I decided to escalate things and called Jaguar InControl’s head office directly. I explained the situation, and they requested my driving license and V5C form. Fair enough, I thought, another hoop to jump through. Unfortunately, I wasn’t home at the time, so it took another day to gather everything.

On October 9th, I submitted everything through their chat system. The agent was very understanding (bless them) but then delivered the kicker: there’s apparently a technical malfunction with my VIN, and they couldn’t deactivate the previous owner. Naturally, they promised to escalate the issue and resolve it within—you guessed it—48 hours.

Today is October 12th, and here I am, writing this post, still very much in the same position. No updates, no solutions, and my F-Type still technically belongs to someone in Glasgow.

At this point, I’m running out of options, patience, and probably hair. If I were to strictly adhere to my insurance’s small print, this whole situation would be no different from leaving my car keys on the street with my name and address attached. The only (tiny) silver lining is that the previous owner probably doesn’t have grand ambitions of driving 300+ miles to unlock their former car just to sit in it. But hey, you never know, right?

So, here I am, turning to the wise and wonderful Jaguar forum community. Has anyone else been through this mess, or does anyone have any brilliant ideas on how I can get my car back from this app limbo? Because right now, it feels like I'm stuck in an episode of Black Mirror, with my F-Type held hostage by an invisible tech glitch.

Any advice or thoughts are much appreciated—if nothing else, at least it might help me preserve what little sanity I have left!

Quite a few issues you've had in your month of ownership with flat batteries and windscreen washers not working.

If you purchased from a Jaguar authorised retailer then they can generate a one time activation email to the new email address the Incontrol account was created with to "force" it over to your account.

If you brought it privately from the man in Glasgow then give him a call to delete the car from his account.

If you brought it from a non Jaguar garage then Jaguar customer services is the only route

I feel your pain and had a very similar experience.

My resolution was to update all the vehicle software OTA and perform a B Call.

Jag tech teams were then able to remove the old owner and add me on.

I was wondering whether this was an Approved Used vehicle purchase?

Some clunky ongoings.....

I agree with Rikochet. I purchased from a BMW ‘specialist’ in July and despite my local JLR dealer stating that ownership had transferred over to me after providing V5 in my name, I had to engage with CRC. I successfully got InControl to recognise me and my account after they performed a SOTA to upgrade from 15.2 to the latest version 20.2. This was despite the car stating there was no update available while running 15.2.

Once I got to this stage, I had a 1 month free subscription to all 3 x InControl services. I had no option to renew past the grace period due to a VIN related error message while attempting to purchase the subscriptions. I needed to get CRC to raise a support ticket to get this resolved.

Further issues then came to light with getting a Nav subscription which needed yet another support ticket via CRC. This was resolved after a visit to Jaguar dealer to perform a VSS sync which luckily resolved that matter.

Finally, after initially getting low battery warnings from day 1. I resolved this myself by replacing the £20 TCU battery.

I thought the low battery warning referred to the main 12V one, the rechargeable TCU battery getting old just results in SOS system failures?

Sorry if I mislead anyone but to clarify. I did get two SOS warnings over a couple of week period but also regular app messages along the lines of car in sleep mode to protect vehicle battery which I read to be related to a low battery issue. Can’t remember the exact wording. These were after a few hours of last locking of car, not the usual few days. Still got these while using a CTEK and main battery appeared in good health.

The original TCU battery was dated 2016, MY 2018 car. Replacing the TCU battery resolved both issues.

Thanks for the response! I got the car from a private dealer, so it’s definitely not through Jaguar’s official channels (unfortunately). The car itself is in “perfect” condition, aside from a couple of minor hiccups. The battery issue was the biggest mystery, but that seemed to sort itself out, so I’m just pretending it never happened! The windscreen washer problem, on the other hand, well… turns out that was down to good ol’ user error. 😅

Rikochet:

Thanks for advice ..Can my car (2016 model year) even be updated over-the-air? I didn’t think this was an option for this age of car, but I’d be happy to be wrong about that. Also, is there a way to find out what software version I’m currently running?

Who told you to press the "B-Call" button? was this advice or did you just try it?

Nigelc:

Thanks for the detailed response, Nigelc! Quick one—where exactly is the TCU battery located? I might just go ahead and get a new one fitted regardless, considering I’ve seen quite a few people mention it as a potential fix for various issues. Would be great to know where to start looking before I start tearing the car apart like a mad scientist...AGAIN.. 🔧

Assuming you have a coupe. It’s in the black module that sits behind the space between the seats, above the arm rest. Pull the trim panel forward from the top and lift out. You’ll see the module on the bulkhead. There’s a single screw to release the battery cover.
Think there are two battery types. Single or double cells. My MY18 has the single cell type battery (Jaguar T2R23864, LR equivalent LR089861).

The TCU unit is behind the centre arm rest 5 minute job remove battery cover in the middle of the unit I replaced mine but it didn’t help with my issue. I’ve got a faulty TCU so it’s booked in to have it replaced.
