So now that the dust has settled, let me give you a cautionary tale.

PX'd my 400 Sport for a 11month old, 9000 mile F Type R in March, which I handed back after 2 weeks of ownership under the terms of the 30day/1000 mile conditional exchange. To cut a very long story short, when I bought the car, it had a couple of paint issues, and the car was taken to the Jaguar body shop for rectification work. When I collected the car, the car was outside, but it had been raining so a cursory check of the rectification work was carried out, which looked ok.

It rained hard for the next few days, and in a break in the weather I had a chance to look over the car, and noticed scratches in both door glasses, and the boot trim was coming away. I'd also noticed something that looked like paint over spray around the bonnet area, so asked for that to be cleaned off and questioned whether the front of the car had been re sprayed, and if so the cause.

The car was in for 4 days, and was returned on the Thursday. On Friday, I had a far greater opportunity to look over the car, the first proper look, and found to my horror that there was significant evidence of the car having had a complete respray. The dealer cant find anything in the records relating to a respray and the quality of the finish around the panel joins was questionable to say the least. Both rear light clusters showed signs of wet and dry, and many plastic areas and rubber trims have over spray on them.

Given that it was quite obvious that it had been completely resprayed, and with no evidence that it has been done by a Jaguar approved body shop, I would have struggled to claim off of the warranty if there was a claim against the paint. Besides which the work required to rectify the issues was considerable. This is an ex Jag fleet car, and when you are spending upwards of 70k, you do not expect a Jaguar approved car to a) have needed a full respray, and secondly b) to be left without a hope in hells chance of pursuing any future claim against the paint finish. Not happy!

The Jaguar strapline is "if you can't tell it's used, its Jaguar Approved". Hmmmmmm - I can this one!!!

I didn't ask the dealer for a new car, I asked for a refund to allow me to source another car at my leisure. There were only 5 F Type R AWD less than a year old for sale through Jaguar Approved in the UK, at the time and I have seen 3 of them. One of them had pristine paintwork and less than 500 miles on the clock, which is exactly where I would have gone if they had refunded me. The dealer offered to buy back my car (as a PX on a pre-registered car held in dealer stock). I reviewed the spec, haggled a bit on the price, but took the deal.

The dealers review of the car I had bought, has shown than while it was used by Jaguar fleet, it was totally resprayed but not to OEM standards. (There is circa 300 microns of paint on the rear wings) which is over twice that norm. They couldn't and wouldn't warranty the paint, and accordingly this left me with the risk.

Hats off to the dealer for honouring the agreement - and actually going the extra mile by offering a new car. I didn't ask them to! We too frequently beat up dealers - on this occasion, they have come good...... theres a but....

The car I returned is now back on the jaguar used car website ready for the next potentially unaware customer, who may not be quite as picky as me, and who may find themselves in a pickle with the paint in due course. This car should not have been put back into the approved used programme, and disposed like any other car not meeting the approved used standard.

Some pics of the poor finish:

Would you share the reg number to avoid others having issues?
(Presume it was an "O" plate)

It is currently still showing on Jaguar Used with my private plate. It should have OY18 TVX

Car number 56719 - Paragon Fleet Solutions was the first owner........ as with all "O" plate cars.

14-MAR-18 PDI by Paragon and then serviced early on 07-JAN-19 by Paragon before arriving at Harwoods Land Rover, Basingstoke on the 23-JAN-19.
No internet history on the car. Glad you got it sorted though.

Thanks - I had found out that it was managed by Paragon (now BCA), and the fact that there were no Jaguar corporate records of the car being reprayed (or any record whatsoever) was the straw that broke the camels back!
