Gearbox Overheating message

A few days ago I had the message "Gearbox Overheating" appear on the info panel. It appeared for a few seconds, with the invitation Press OK to Clear, but then disappeared before I did anything. It wasn't a warm day and driving had not been over-enthusiastic, though the preceding few miles had been in Dynamic & Sport mode. I switched to Rain/Ice mode and cruised carefully the next few miles to destination, then stopped a couple of hours. Returned home 60 miles with no recurrence of message, and none since.
By pure coincidence the car was already booked with Jag indie in Taunton the following day for its first gearbox oil change (8 years old, 33k miles) along with a new rear diff, and oil changes to front diff & transfer box (AWD). The fault code for the overheating message was sent to diagnostic expert but no conclusions could be drawn apparently. The gearbox oil/filter change is due to be done tomorrow which may resolve the issue, but it's an expensive "what if" at around £800. He'll check the condition of the oil before going ahead with the change, as he's concerned whether water contamination in the gearbox oil could cause it?? Says this could mean gearbox rebuild needed... But I'd have thought the fault message would recur if that was the problem.
I can't find this topic elsewhere in the forum so I guess not a common issue, but has anyone come across this before and what has the prognosis been?
With thanks in anticipation....

It could be a faulty temperature sensor so that would be worth checking to ensure it’s sending the correct voltage back to the ECU, hopefully your issue won’t be anything like a gearbox rebuild but they do like to prepare you for the worst
