First drive V6S

OK, just back from my first drive in the F-Type

Car was a V6S, 19" wheels (and for those interested in the important stuff in Stratus Grey/Black interior) - a combination of sweeping country roads, motorway and crappy country roads :)

Firstly, this is a great car to drive, but you have to prepare yourself and the car and balance your expectations

The steering is really quick, at first I thought I would struggle to get used to it, but then after a mile or so it clicked.

With everything set to 'standard' the ride is extremely comfortable, even given the state of the roads around here. Performance was more than adequate in gear, but the kick down was pretty 'slow', well compared with the DSG/PDK type boxes I've driven.

With dynamic mode on, but still in 'D' things do sharpen up a bit, but the gear changes are still slow.

Going to full attack mode though, well things do get interesting. Fantastic burbles and overruns from the exhaust, gear held right to the red line, you have to change manually, really quick gear changes via the paddles, but still fantastic ride quality - not soft, you know you are driving in sports mode- but not crashy either. You never lose the feeling of the weight though - but that is probably more my current drive being quite a bit lighter - you might not notice it so much depending on what you are coming from.

BUT, it's still stuck somewhere between a GT and a full on sports car - I'd say it's natural competitor is more the SL's of this world rather than the 911s (though it's been a while since I've driven an SL) - though sportier than the SL.

On the motorway, roof up, in 'comfort' mode its a great car too - very well isolated from both wind and tyre noise.

SO, my conclusion, it IS a great car, no two ways about it - but it's going to depend on what you want from the car. As an out and out sports car it falls just short... there are a lot better cars for this (usual suspects I'm afraid). But if you want something that is pretty good at being sporty, but you can dial it back and have a great GT car, then this should be on your list - just how much do you want to pay for that fantastic exhaust sound is another question...?

Obviously any excuse for a gratuitous pic... blimey it does look big next to the spyder!

Great Pic. This is the first picture I have seen next to a Porsche. it really does give you a better impression of the size of the F type. I agree with what you say. Out and out sports car it isnt, This is not a weekend track car. There are a lot of very nice cars available within this price bracket. It all depends on what exactly you are looking for. I for one are not disappointed with my choice.

Thanks for the write up.

I would imagine the F will be more exclusive than the 911s of this world which might be enough to sway some people too.
