Expansion tank hose spigot / clip failure

New to me V6S awd.

I have covered approx 1600 miles since purchasing.

Yesterday, the pipe from the header tank to the new style aluminium component, came off during driving, leading to coolant going absolutely everywhere. Luckily I was in a position to stop and turn off the car quickly.

Looking at the spigot of the aluminium section it looks very rounded, which the plastic clip has slipped off, or maybe failed in some other way. It can now be pushed in and pulled out without much force or any releasing of the clip.

The older plastic style seems to have a much more square (flat) face, for this clip to click behind. (attached pic taken from another post I found whilst searching for information). 79E7BD04-8E7C-4DA5-B71B-986FF8D87ED6.jpeg

I cannot seem to find any post from anyone who has experienced this issue, unless I am searching for the wrong thing! If anyone has any experience of this, I would be very interested and thankful to hear about it!

Currently held in place with a cable tie, so I could get to the tap to rinse off the coolant

Looking at the aluminium bit , I would use a fine file to remove the casting line on the side first and see if it holds on better . If that fails if you look at the alloy one versus the plastic one .The alloy one is rounded whereas the plastic one has a flat edge for the clip to hold on to. Depending how far the pipe pushes on , I would look at filing the rounded edge to look more like the plastic one but only if removing the casting line does not work.

thanks for the reply, this is one avenue I had thought about. I was a bit worried about taking too much material off and causing other issues, and was also wondering if maybe the pipe was meant to be replaced with a different type of fitment when the upgrade was carried out. It certainly doesn’t feel like a positive attachment

Once you’ve cleaned up the casting you could put a jubilee clip or similar around the casting and the locking plastic piece to prevent it flexing and popping off again. No need to be very tight, but just to prevent movement.

Or maybe change the awkward looking right angle connector to a standard hose, like this:

held in place with a jubilee clip or hose clip.

I'm not near my own car a the moment so can't check hose diameters.

That is a very poorly finished casting and not at all suitable for that type of retaining clip. As already stated, I would file away the casting line and gently remove a little material so that there is a flatter surface just where the clip fastener sits. Once you are comfortable that it seats well, just a cable tie should lock it.

As discussed, I have cleaned up the casting and filed to create a flatter lip. The clip still does not hold, and pulls off very easily. Not sure how it held before to be honest. :?

Secured with a jubilee clip for the moment, but I am not happy with it due to the angles and pressure. So will have to look for a solution.

Looking through invoices from previous owner, the work was carried out in May, but having spoken to the fitting dealers, it carries no warranty.

I’ve spoken to the local jaguar main dealer, and they can only supply the plastic pipes, which means I would have to change the Y pipe again too, which I would like to avoid!

As Navigator Ni says just put a silicone hose on . looking at the seller they make reducer pipes that go from one diameter to a different one .(I have bought silicone pipes from this seller before for my motorbikes and they are good quality. ) I would say a jubilee clip is ok for the alloy end but go for a stainless fuel line hose clip (the ebay seller also sees them) for where it fixes to the plastic pipe so that it does not crush the plastic pipe.
The original pipe is made that way so that during car production it saves time by having a push on pipe.
The easiest way to find out the size of pipe that you need is to get some open end metric spanners and offer them over the outside of the plastic pipe and the alloy outlet piece.
