a lot has been mentioned on here regarding flat batteries after something has been plugged into usb port, i experienced it when i first got my car after disconnecting an ipod . is there a specific method for disconnecting something from it or is just pot luck if it hangs? i know about the light on hazard switch if it hasn't shut down.

I've never heard of flat batteries caused by USB ports. Where have you heard this from?

Maybe you can point us in the direction of the discussion?

Never heard of it before, and I have left the same USB stick in for three years!
I never access the music on it really as I'm concentrating on keeping the car the right side up 😉

I leave the dongle for my wireless voice-activated Carplay plugged into the onboard USB full time.
I have not had a problem.
If you did have a problem you should notice that the red triangle warning light stays illuminated for more than 10-15 minutes.
Then you have battery drain going on. Otherwise, you should be fine.

when i 1st got the car the day after plugging in the ipod the car was completely dead, jaguar assistance came out and got into the car with the key. it was jump started and there was no longer any drain, he said it was because the car hadn't shut down and the usb connection was the likely cause.

Interesting, but I suspect he was confusing the ports. Isn't the USB port ignition switched, so anything left plugged in wouldn't be able to draw power?

The US forum is full of threads about people having flat batteries a few days after their smog tester has connected to the OBD port.

It won't be USB and must be OBD and the completely flat battery reset everything which is one of two ways of fixing an incorrectly closed OBD session and hence its fixed.

Jaguar assistance says USB Vs Forum owners telling you it is not...and we are always right;-)

I defy anyone to plug an iPod into a Jaguar F-Type battery and take to the state of "completely dead" (assuming it was in a serviceable state before) within one day. If anyone can replicate that then the Beer's on me!

Did your car have any work done to it or any other intervention at all, by anyone leading up to the dead battery?

don't know as it was 2 days after i collected car.

Well here's a way to prove the guy is completely wrong...

If your battery is currently in a healthy state, (i will turn the car over with reasonable urgency), plug your iPod in, and leave it connected for half a day.

If he is to be believed, then I would expect a low battery warning to come up on the display after this period...don't worry the car will start and it won't damage a thing.

Would hedge my bets that the car will be fine and dandy and no warnings will show.

Please also tell us when the car is locked and alarm has armed fully (after 30 secs) If after another 2 minutes, the Hazard warning triangle in the centre of the switch cluster is lit.

If it is, then you need to whip the +ve from the battery for enough time to make a cuppa and reconnect it to irradiate the Gremlin that's in your system!

thanks tel, ive resisted plugging anything in to the usb port since but will try this weekend.

Forget the I-Pod, just plug in your cellphone for a quicker easier test.
With the car power on (engine off), you should see the phone is charging (lightning bolt display).
Turn of the car power, you should see the phone stop charging.
Provided this happens, you are not drawing ANY power from the USB with the engine/power off.
Also, as previous, you should see th small red triangle in the centre of your dashboard turn off after 10-15 minutes.
If the red triangle stays illuminated you have a power draw occurring somewhere, but not from the USB.

Yep anything with a light when connected (i have some charging cables with LED's in) plug them in after 3 mins of locking the car they go out and no longer draw current from the battery, you can do same with the cigarette lighter socket that should do the same.
