As I understand it, there have been problems with carbon deposits building up in the inlet and on the back of the valves, eventually resulting in all sorts of running problems and failures. VW/Audi 2.0 turbo engines appear to have suffered more than some and a few BMW, but it's not exclusive to these. Carbon builds up, because in direct injection the valves are no longer washed by the intake of petrol vapour through the inlet and the EGR circulates oil vapour which sticks to the inlet and back of the valves. The higher pressures in turbo engines are mentioned to amplify the problem. Interestingly VW 2.0 GTI's don't get reported with problems as much as other models. Perhaps these get more of the 'Italian tune up'.
