Catalyst issue with exhaust

Hi all,

Been lurking around the forum since ownership of my first F-Type V6S since 2016, now owner of an SVR since 2018. Had an engine management light come on this week plus an “SOS System Limited Functionality” alert which has been popping up now and then. Took it into into my local dealer for a diagnosis (£192!? just to plug it into a computer to see the error codes, when an MOT is only £55). Reported back the following:

Exhaust - “will need to install new PCM SW and retest, if fault reoccurs new cat will be req 1.0 catalyst efficiency causing EML on. Req new Catalyst (bank 2) 2.5”, quoting £1,056 (gulp!)

Electrical - “SOS warning message not on at the moment but DTC stored for antenna issue, advise roof pod for this”, quoting £278

My car is a 2017 model, with 22.5k miles on the clock. Bought it with a couple of thousand on, apparently used by Jaguar management. The included approved used warranty expired in November which I then extended for another year. Apparently neither of these items are covered by this, which is disappointing, especially in case of the exhaust issue. Apparently this can happen with the age of the car according to them, I feel this is odd having only covered the mileage I have (had my V6S from new and covered 33k over few months under 3 years).

I intend to get a second opinion from an independent and hopefully more reasonable costs, but thought I’d post here and hopefully get some of your thoughts, perhaps from those who may have had similar issues and experience.

Thanks in advance!

OEM catalytic converters are warranted for 8 years or 80K miles by law on all US cars including Jaguars.
Replaceemnt catalytic converters are warranted for 5 years oor 50K miles by law.
I am surprised UK law does not give you more protection.

Antenna issues are common. I've had mine changed already although the car on the sat nav map was miles out so easy to diagnose. Sometimes you will get SOS unavailable if the car has no signal. I sometimes get it at work if I park round the back for example.

The cat is an interesting one because you would presume that the cat can only convert what gases pass through it. IE if engine running incorrectly the cat may become damaged? Doesn't sound quite right to me. The extended warranty does not include cats but does include consequential damage so if its a faulty injector or sensor that has caused damage to the cat then that would be covered.

I would get a second opinion.

I've just renewed my extended warranty for another year (its already paid for its self 3+ times over so seemed daft not to).
This time I've been posted a warranty handbook which came in the post today.

To the OP of this topic. It says:

Does not cover - Exhaust systems
And then in brackets - (Catalytic convertors ARE covered for internal failure where not related to accident damage or incorrect fuel).

So Cats are covered anyway.

JLR one. They offered two different ones this year (both with or without jaguar assistance).

"Select" which is the cheapest and covers most things but has a single claim limit of 3k and limits of £60ph labour like the RAC, ALA and other third party ones. Standard stuff.

"Extended" which seems to cover pretty much the same things but adds consequencial damage to parts not normally covered and comes with the £750 mot cover voucher which seems to cover everything else like brake discs etc. And no claim limit (up to value of car) and no limits on labour.

So took the extended again as that covered the new exhaust because valves were seized and headlight washer motor replacement and investigations and diagnostic charges previously last year and car has MOT and service booked at main dealer again who I get on with and was cheaper than independent quotes.

Also just renewed my extended with EU breakdown cover.
Last year’s almost covered itself with a new supercharger snout and centre vent - done through my Indy with zero hassle.
A previous year paid for itself about 16x over, so a no brainer for me to keep renewing it up to the 10 year/100k mile limit.

Thanks for the replies.

I was rather shocked by the £192 (£80 for each issue plus VAT) to diagnose the issues.

In my handbook I can only find reference to the exhaust under “Doesn’t cover” section: “Exhaust systems including Diesel Particulate Filters* (DPF)” “* Unless part of a valid claim, or required due to failure of a covered part causing consequential damage.”, no mention of cats.

Odd. Last year as car turned 3 and I purchased the extended warranty I didn't get anything from them and had to complain just to get a letter saying what I had purchased but had no issues with warranty claims.

This year as car turned 4 I've had confirmation emails, payment dates through the post, confirmation of the certificate numbers etc, and today the brochures etc.

Does this help?

Cats are covered for internal failure.

Strange, when did you purchase yours exactly? Mine was November last year. Seems to be different, orientation change for a start.

I took the same extend warranty as SimpleR, comes in to parts main and then mot part. In short if car is only serviced once a year at mot then you covered for all items big or small.
