Buying used F type

Hi people,

I was hoping that someone could help me with regards to buying approved used. In general, can people let me know what kind of discount I should aim to get? I appreciate all dealers have different margins on different cars, however, it would be really great if any of you could share with me some of the discounts you guys managed to get when buying approved used!

Thanks in advance!

It's really just a case of playing the game, say what you are willing to pay and then wait for them to talk.

All depends on the person you're dealing with, if you are a cash buyer or part-ex., if it's "the" car and spec. for you, etc.

In the current climate I reckon F-Types don't drive out the doors so it's worth offering to take their PCP if you can pay it off straight away with no penalty - and then looking for things like the premium mats, install latest satnav download, tyre / wheel / brake condition, and so on.

To be honest every sale is slightly different so your best approach is to do your homework well - show any equivalent lower priced cars available, look for a service plan, inspect the service history, and reach a point at which you are happy with the deal. I find the polite and knowledgable approach works best - chat and let them invest their time in you and they'll be hungry to close, so make them work hard for it and get it all in writing.

I was fortunate that, although Jaguar located the car for me to the spec. I wanted (Performance seats, switchable active exhaust, heated front screen, 20" turbine wheels) and it hadn't even been loaded onto the Approved Used system yet, I managed to get a number of items thrown in including the latest sat-nav, new rear tyres (old ones were still just within Jag limiits), fresh number plates, Jag valve caps, swapping the aluminium shift paddles from my XE, an early MOT and service. The stars must have been aligned because I reckon I got a cracking deal in the end.

I bought over two years ago, but at that point they were not negotiating at all (looked at several cars). Walked away, the whole shebang but nothing doing. Floor mats and one of the insurances is all I managed. Although there was potentially wiggle room if I wanted to go on finance, for cash there was no movement at all really.

Seen car i wanted and told main dealer what i was willing to pay which was about £3,500 less than screen price. Just left it at that and they gradually wore down and i got it at price i asked with two new rear tyres thrown in (i also decided to pay for fronts whilst rears were being done as although fronts were about 4.5 mm thought it would be good to have new tyres all round and i could hold them accountable if they damaged the alloys)

Did i get a good deal? hard to tell - seemed to be cheaper than other used approved of same age with similar mileage and has all the carbon fibre goodies / CC brakes.

Fact is though as soon as I drove away i may as well have thrown up to £10K in the bin as selling it privately / trading in that's what you loose with a car less than 3 years old that depreciates like ours do - but i knew all that when deciding to get the best sounding / looking car in the world......:-)

I know how you feel as I was in the same dilemma. Looked at all the dealers for a late model V8 R cabriolet. Did find one 2016 that was not my ideal colour. Found 1 private 2017. Low mileage in the colour I wanted, but needed 1 tyre & a service which is now all done. Do I regret it ,not at all & saved well over 10k on a £104,000 car. For 1/2 price. At just 2 years old I could not have even got a coupe for the money.
