"Banana arm" wear

I've just been told the front suspension control arms, a.k.a. Banana Arms, need replacement for the MoT - car is 9 yrs old and 42k miles. How common is this, and does it seem a low mileage for such a component to be worn? There's nothing to feel or hear when driving to indicate wear so I expect it's not severe.

Seems like low mileage for replacement to me but it depends on how and where the car has been driven e.g. rough road surfaces, potholes etc.

If I were you I’d get a second opinion from another garage. The front lower wishbone arms ('Banana arms') for your AWD are shown here (item number 2 - Part number T2R7879)...https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/parts/index/part/id/152.1068.2396.11223/brand/jaguar/

If you do need them you'll be able to get good quality ones (e.g LEMFÖRDER) much cheaper than a JLR main dealer. Here's an Autodoc link... https://www.autodoc.co.uk/lemforder/13473200

is it just the bush on the end?
If it is, the part number is T2R6092 which is a lot cheaper. However, these sort of wishbone bushes can be a real bugger to press in and it’s usually easier to buy the complete wishbone as the bush is already in place. Also, on the other end of it there’s a smaller bush which may have some wear so it makes sense to buy the complete unit.

Timely article in this month's JEC magazine with Swallows promoting their range of suspension arms with pre pressed bushes.

The F-type is covered and they also offer uprated polyurethane bushes if you want to reduce future wear.

Think it mentioned that they are offered in road and track variants, so you can maintain an acceptable on road ride quality whilt improving responsiveness.

Spoke with Swallows Jaguar this morning and they aren't yet offering them for the F-Type but are in the process. Here’s some info from their link https://swallows-jag.co.uk/sr-brand-new-poly-bush-arms/

"Each unit begins life as a brand-new Lemförder arm—one of the world’s most trusted OEM suppliers. Where applicable, we press in polyurethane bushes for improved durability and handling, while retaining Lemförder’s OEM-spec ball joints and spherical bearings, ensuring factory-grade reliability and ride quality.

Two Bush Options to Match Your Needs

Depending on your driving style and vehicle use, you can choose from two polyurethane bush specifications:

Road Series – 24% stiffer than original equipment (OE) rubber. Perfect for daily drivers and performance road cars, offering a balance of comfort and improved responsiveness.
Performance/Track Series – 37% stiffer than OE rubber. Designed for track, racing, or aggressive use, delivering sharper handling with maximum chassis control.

This tailored approach means you can upgrade your vehicle’s suspension without compromising on comfort—or go all-in for race-ready performance.

Why Choose Pre-Assembled Arms?

• No need for specialist tools – Forget 50-tonne presses and complex fitting procedures.
• No need to return cores – Keep your original arms or recycle them locally.
• No installation stress – Simply unbolt your old arms and fit the new ones using basic hand tools.
• No compromise – You get factory quality parts with superior bushings, ready to fit and engineered to last.

This is a Swallows Racing ‘plug-and-play’ solution that saves time, reduces cost, and improves handling performance."

Whilst poly bushes are always sold as an upgrade, they have a trade off to consider in that NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) can be significantly increased, which on road focussed car manufacturers spend enormous effort reducing.

If you're OK with this and will tolerate less comfortable ride on long journeys and uneven road surfaces and prefer the relatively minor improvements to steering and handling then they can be a good idea.

Personal experience of poly bushes on another sports car is that I'd never fit them again unless I wanted a track car.

If you do need to replace the front lower wishbone arms ('Banana arms') on your car, my recommendation is the LEMFÖRDER ones that I posted earlier (includes link) which have pre-pressed bushes. Autodoc sell them at around £313 for the pair inc VAT and delivery....they are currently showing in stock. Alternatively you could have a search for them on ebay etc. Of course, you may decide to renew the bushes only, but that could turn out to be false economy as I explained earlier.

At the time of writing, the F-Type front lower wishbone arms with pre-pressed polyurethane bushes are not shown on the Swallows Jaguar website but to give you an idea there are similar ones on there which are priced at £576 (£480 plus VAT) for the pair as shown here https://swallows-jag.co.uk/product/sr-new-poly-bush-front-lower-arms-c2z10052-c2c39683-c2c36029-t2r6092/ I'm not sure if there's a delivery charge on top of that?

The Lemforder wishbones can also be ordered from SNG Barratt.
I've just compared prices between SNG Barratt and Autodoc for the LEMFÖRDER front lower wishbone arms (JLR part number T2R7879) applicable to the OP's F-Type AWD.
SNG Barratt are around £80 more expensive inc VAT and delivery.
