Autowatch Ghost-II CANbus Immobiliser

I’ve been looking at Tracker devices for my car and have found what appears to be a very good alternative or addition. This is the ‘Autowatch Ghost-II CANbus Immobiliser’ which is supplied & fitted for approx £449 inc VAT and has no annual subscription (unlike a good GPS Tracker). It can also be taken out and re-installed if you change cars.

I’ve spoken with an Automotive Technology Specialist in my area who informed me that this is one of the best vehicle security products on the market.

Here’s some information about it.....

“The Ghost protects your car from key-cloning, hacking, key theft, and has no key-fobs or LED indications to give away its location. The Ghost uses the buttons in your vehicle such as those on the steering wheel, door panels or centre console, to allow you to make a unique, changeable, disarm sequence (like a PIN code) that must first be entered before you can drive your car. Just like your credit card but you can make your car disarm sequence even safer by making it up to 20 presses long!”

“Even if your vehicle is physically towed away, thieves will not be able to start it once a Ghost Immobiliser is fitted!”

“In order to make extreme security also be hassle free, we have created a smart-phone application that connects to your car and allows you to get in and drive without having to enter the disarm sequence. This Ghost-II allows 2 phones to be connected. All you have to do is pair your phone with your Ghost-II, leave the Autowatch Ghost-II application running in the background with Bluetooth enabled and you can drive conveniently and securely. However, remember that if you phone is in range (5m to 10m) and the application is running the Ghost-II will be disarmed.”

“The Ghost2 immobiliser is now TASSA (Tracker and Aftermarket security systems association) registered and any company that fits the GHOST IMMOBILISER must be TASSA registered. This is great news for customers as Thatcham did not have a category for this type of immobiliser. A TASSA installation requires us to discretely mark the vehicle with QR codes linked to information on a TASSA database, should the vehicle then be taken and recovered by the Police they will be able to quickly identify the registered owner regardless of the registration.”

Does anyone have this security system or something similar fitted to their car?

Interesting that they now have an app linked to a phone. That might sell it to me.

I was aware of the device before, but the fiddly nature of having to remember a combo of buttons, combined with the extra wear of those buttons over the years, were the reasons I hadn't got one fitted. Certainly going to look at this now, thanks RSPN :)

@Cluck

It’s definitely more convenient now that they’ve created a smart-phone app which allows you to get in and drive the car without having to enter the disarm sequence via the buttons on the steering wheel/door panels/centre console etc 👍

As well as the Ghost-II CANbus Immobiliser being one of the best vehicle security products on the market, I also like the fact there’s no monthly/annual subscription fee with it.

You'd have to watch out your phone doesnt transmit from your bedroom to the parked car.

Good point.

However, the Ghost-II immobiliser will remain armed on the vehicle providing the smart-phone application isn’t running if it’s within range (5m to 10m)......something to remember when parking the car.

It does point out in the details that you should close the app when you're not in the car. To be honest, that's what I do with the tracking app too, it doesn't need to be running except when I'm sat in the car. It's nice to have it as an option though, rather than only having the "press this combo of buttons in your car".

That said, it would be quite cool if it recognises the turning of the temp sensors, so you could pretend you're opening a locked safe!

What a brilliant idea! :D

Will keep you posted, I picked my F up today and having Ghost installed tomorrow. Dealer sold the idea to me, the dealer is a high end car dealership and Ghost is the preferred option amongst their customers.

I suppose it becomes second nature to close the app when your not in the car......similar to double locking with the key fob.

Your idea for the rotational temp sensor controls could be worth asking/suggesting to Autowatch UK Ltd?

Here’s something I’ve read which you could mention before having the Ghost-II CANbus Immobiliser installed......

"Firstly If you crash the can system on any vehicle the car ain't going to start because it won't recognise the key immobiliser system so that's ruled out, secondly most cars have more than one can system and if you know what you are doing you will choose the one which will not allow the outer mirrors to be part of that system. If the ghost system is fitted to the high standard like its meant to be then it's the best security solution full stop."

Ghost II installation complete. Please note, this immobiliser operates differently depending on year of car. So we have cars up to and including '16, and for those that are '16 onwards. Yes, they crossover and for those with a '16 plate can have either type of install as it is dependent on the type of fusebox you have. For mine (a '16 plate) it fell into the earlier car install type, meaning the car is digitally disabled, but cars with the later fusebox, have an analogue immobiliser. I will explain, with a digital immobiliser you can start the car but the immobiliser disables the gearbox (prevents you from any sort of gear selection) as I have. With the later cars, they have the more traditional immobilisation in preventing the car from actually starting. Both types of installation are protected by a 4 to 20 button presses entered via various means (paddles, steering wheel buttons for instance). Or, you can download the Autowatch Ghost II app to automate the process of disabling the immobiliser.

For me, having this extra layer of protection was a no-brainer and I am very happy I made the decision to go with it.

Keep us posted on how it is for day to day living.

I know when I was looking at getting an F-Type, a friend who's best friend was just selling his F-Type R, suggested getting it as it was pretty much the only thing capable of stopping somebody driving your car away, even with cloned keys or whatever method was used in that video somebody posted the other day (possible key reprogramming). Combined with a good steering lock (as the visual deterrent) and a good tracker, you'd hope your car is safe from everything bar being hoisted onto a low-loader (though the tracker should alert you the moment the car starts moving).

Looking at having a Ghost immobiliser fitted. This thread is now a few years old, does anyone have any experiences they can share/recommend ? Thanks.

Seems like a lot of complexity and expense to do something so simple, I simply fitted a toggle switch that disables the gear selector, hidden in a location in the cab that shall remain secret.

I’ve have and have had several installs across past and present cars. I’ll not detail which but several JLR and other makes.
I find the system excellent and simple to operate. Key sequences can be made to be memorable and in fact you can use the Ghost app on iPhone to automatically disarm the system as you enter the car. This makes life easy to the point you have an uncrackable system that is invisible to you.
Strongly recommend it to anyone.
Look for bundles packages from installers as some offer trackers too.
Final comment is don’t let them fit window decals. No point in telling muppets, just let them fail to start it even if they open the door.

Exactly, you've got the right idea.

We always used to break the hot wire to the HT coil on 70's cars.

There are always ways round any electronic countermeasure fitted, and the T-Leafs are always one step ahead.

If you have a driveway, a simple fold over ground post is the kiddie.

CCTV and an OBD port lock, and a Crooklock for the steering wheel if you so wish...simple.

Had one fitted, does what says on the tin. Interestingly it does allow the car to be started but not driven
They work differently on different cars. Some start but can’t go into gear, others light the dash, but the engine can’t be turned. EV’s indicate ‘ready’ then shut down when drive is selected.
