Alternative Oil Level Readings

I've decided to service my car myself this year - it needs the diff oil, gearbox oil and engine oil changing this year, so i've found a local guy with a 4 post lift i can go and use.

I've ordered all the stuff and swotted up on the procedures etc (I've done diff oil before and oil changes on other cars), so should save quite a few quid. Cost of parts is about £350 all in.

Anyway - Oil level can be found in the menus, but to change to and from the LIVE level you need the Cruise Control Cancel button. Mine has decided not to work - i dont use it so assume it needs removing and changing for a new one.

I'm doing the work on Monday - so have stuck the OBD reader on the car and found two sets of live oil data. The car is on a level driveway and reports the oil level is OK in the menus, so is the below the OBD equivalent?

1. Engine Oil Level - Measured 0.12m

2. Engine Oil Volume - Calculated 7L

12cm of oil in the sump sounds credible - anyone else used these stats to check oil levels?

To add to this, I've been doing some more research and messing with the car.

My Cruise Cancel Button does work - the procedure seems to need the bonnet open as well as only working when the engine has been run and then switched back off. I really should read the procedures properly

Then go into the menus.... oil level...... It will then say Oil level unavailable. Press Cruise Control Cancel button twice quickly and it then reports the live oil level, rather than an average (i think).

Not sure if the procedure needs the bonnet open on facelifted cars etc, but as an early car it wont do it without the bonnet open (which makes sense as your servicing the car).

I'm still interested if anyone has used the OBD levels and if they tend to correlate, however as i'd use this to match the same stats i took this morning when refilling (plus measuring the oil i take out, put the same back in etc).

I guess so - i will do that as it might be an alternative for some, especially if buttons dont work..

Why on earth it doesnt have a dipstick is beyond me.

I changed the engine oil yesterday, so i used both the dash and obd reader to confirm the oil levels and volumes.

It certainly does correlate and does help if you want to check how much to put in if the dashboard reports underfill, which is does like to do.

I wanted to avoid overfilling the engine, so it does seem quite accurate. I was 250ml under, so added that much and the dash readout reflected that and then reported 'Oil Level OK'.

The important thing is to warm the engine and leave it at least 10 mins to allow the oil to mainly return the sump for measurement, but certainly helped.
